Cream or Sunburst with tort pickguard?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a parts bass I built 5 or 6 years ago with mostly spare parts that I had laying around. It has an MIM J neck, Fender bridge, G&L MFD humbucker in the P position, a tort guard I had custom made, and a P body of unknown wood I purchased off of eBay for cheap. It is a really nice sounding and playing bass.

But the neck doesn't fit tightly in the neck pocket, and it doesn't look very good, so I am planning on buying a GFS body. I can't decide between the SB or the cream. Both colors go well with tort IMO, and I don't currently have a bass with either color, so I thought I would see what the TB consensus is.

The bass in question, when it had a fretless Warmoth neck on it:

I love a good burst or a clear finish. There's no place to hide junk wood. I've stripped a couple of bodies that were worn and I was astounded at the junk wood with knots in it under a nice paint job. There's no place to hide that stuff under a transparent finish. That's why alot of builder charge extra for these finishes. A clear finish is just as easy to spray as a color...but you have to pay more for the better lumber.

Win/win, bro. Flip a coin! I can't vote. Both are fabulous.

Given the opportunity, I will always vote against sunburst, though that cream color does nothing for me.

I have the cream P body from GFS. I like it with black but don't think it would look as good with tort. IMO sunburst looks better with tort. My only concern about the GFS sunburst body is that it is a transparent finish. If you get one with a bad grain pattern you will be able to see it.

Either way, if you are planning to use the same humbucker it will fit in that route with no problem!

Cream or white with tort: Win. Sunburst with tort: Win.

I prefer white w/ tort.

colors are such a personal thing. My vote is Other: go with a color that YOU like.

There's a thread here of a guy that is having his custom bass rebuilt because the neck binding color is off-white and not pure white! Its all about personal tastes. Pick what makes YOU happy.

That said, if it were me, I'd go with the burst. Only because I don't have a burst bass.......yet. lol.

Is there such a thing as a "bad" grain pattern?

Maybe not "bad" but how about less attractive. If you look at the example on the Guitar Fetish site it has a large dark spot under the pickup route. I personally don't care for that but it might not bother others. I just don't think the paulownia wood has as nice of a grain pattern as other woods.

Can't speak for the OP but I love how it sounds in mine. I have it wired series/split/parallel so it gives me more tonal options.

"Good burst" being the key here!!! Judging from the pix, that is about as nice as I've seen in a while. I have an '08 MIA Jazz burst, the cherry red looks like a bad afterthought. Many of the Fenders from the mid 60's on IMHO border on the hideous! Actually either would look just as good with tort, but pearloid white on the burst would be pretty sweet too!!!

It sounds great! Those MFDs are great pickups, and I have it in the same location as an L1000 (hardwired in parallel), so it sounds like an L1000 in humbucker mode. Like a P on steroids.

How is that bridge? It looks really nice for the price. Did you have any problem installing it? I notice the body isn't drilled for a bridge. The body on the bass now wasn't either, and getting the bridge placed right was a pain, as was drilling a hole for the bridge ground wire to travel through. I used to have a 12" long drill bit I got from Stew Mac that was made for drilling holes between cavities (because it moved the drill to where it was outside the body, allowing you to get the right angle without having the drill in the way), but I can't find it and they don't seem to sell them anymore. How did you do it?

I think I've decided to go with sunburst. Thanks for all your input.
