Need some help here - did a search and could find nothing here in the forum - also not sure if this is the right place to post this. Moderators, forgive if I have made and error and please move this to the proper place.
I know nothing about this fabric thing - Would like to find something like this:
I am designing a bass "vault" for my soon to be 16 basses, and I would like to use crushed velvet to cover any exposed foam and to protect the basses from any finish issues where the instruments rest against the "stand" so to speak - so they will not interact with the chemical nature of the foam.
I am dumbfounded by the amount of velvets out there and the lack of specific information about what fabric is 100% safe for this purpose. I am reading that cotton velvet is the safest, without chemical dyes - but it doesn't really come "crushed" in the more beautiful sense that we are all used to in our plush bass cases. I am also reading that certain dyes in lesser quality velvet/faux fur fabrics can effect finishes over time with respect to the dye breaking down - and that some of the polyester fabrics can even exude certain gasses which can discolor or harm a guitar finish over time.
Does anyone know anything about this? I have been searching and trying to find a nice crushed velvet which is not chemically treated, to no avail - I have also been searching on crushed velvet as it relates to guitar cases, and again very little about which type of crushed velvet is safe.
Am I over-thinking this? I know many put their basses in a case with crushed velvet and can leave it there for extended periods with no ill effects. Is there a trade secret that I should know about what type of material is safe to use over the long haul? I will be subjecting my entire collection and I want to be sure that I pick the best possible fabric that will be fine over time.
By the way, for those who were following it, the Fender PJ I pulled the trigger on from Japan friday arrived safe and sound yesterday. It is truly in amazing shape and a rare find and hard to believe it was here in three days.
It's a work in progress but much more about it here: http://www.innertainment.net/jazzspecialB.html
