Custom bass to get a Ric(ish) sound?

Sign in to disble this ad
I don't know if this has been posted before or if this is the right place if not let me know plz.

Right now I want to build a parts bass and want to get as close to a ric sound as I can. I understand that this goal is most likely unatainable but I want to try anyway. I know that real rics are nt and solid maple. I was wondering if I made a body out of solid maple and loaded it with those seymour Duncan ric style pups would I get a similar sound.j

I am aware that I sound like a noob but I really love to make things from scratch. Also I don't intend to copy the shape or anything like that just a similar sound. Any and all help is appreciated.

I think you posted on the wrong side of TalkBass. I reckon a moderator can move this for you. Good luck with your bass.

Before the Mods move this thread, I have a 4002. I also had a 4001 in the past. Due to a synergy of the body construction, materials used, pickup configurations (not just the windings with 44AWG wire) and such, not to mention the 33 1/4 inch scale, you're just not going to get a Rickenbacker tone from anything but a Rickenbacker. Case in point: in addition to all the above, I also have a P-style bass with a Rick HB-1 pickup in the P position (d-g segment). Does it sound like a Rick? No, it sounds like a P-bass, albeit with a bit more "push."

Bottom line (pun intended): if you want a Rickenbacker, save your $$ and purchase a Rickenbacker.

Now, Mods -- take it away!
