Custom neck - painted fretboard?

Sign in to disble this ad
Can anybody tell me if it's feasible, when ordering a custom bass, to get a painted fretboard?

At first, I thought that would be dumb, because eventually the strings would wear through the paint and then it would look like crap.

But then I read a bunch of posts about how many years of Geddy Lee basses have painted on blocks and that they have clear lacquer over them and hold up just fine.

So that makes me think that you could paint a whole fretboard and lacquer it the same way and it should hold up.

Yes? No? Anybody know of any examples?

I've seen tons of basses with painted fingerboards (a lot of customs but also the green and pink Deans come to mind), why would the strings wear through the paint?
On a fretless, yes, there would be wear from the strings, but on a fretted...?
