Question CV P vs J vs

Sign in to disble this ad
SO ive only heard good things about the classic vibes basses. Ive never owned a P or a J bass though, I have played my friends Squire Affinity P and I own a P/J Legend bass. So not really the best basses to compare tones.

I normally play Sludge/metal/punk/classic rock or some wierd variant of genres. Also with some heavy fuzz from my Fuzz Factory. Currently my rig is a MB 210 and a 410 MBE. My ESP Ex-104 sounds really great with it. It has two soapbar pups. So I wouldnt want something with the same tone, so theres actually a point in having a second bass. However not something totally different so I know I will still like the tone.

New Pups would be a deffinite with whichever bass I choose. Probably the Fender Custom Shop J or P pups. Hoever Ive heard good things about the Seymour Duncan Quater Pounders.

So if you were going to play heavy fuzzed out loud metal which would you prefer and why, the CV P or J?

A P with its humbucking pickup will definitely hum less. That might be an important factor if you're playing through massive fuzz.

you think the J would have bad hum? also yes since the fuzz factory squeals more than....a pig?

I voted P because of the hum as mentioned, and because I just think it's better suited for heavy music.

What is this thing you have about changing out the pickups? You've never played one of these yet, and you've already decided to change the pickups? That makes no sense. Play one for a while, get it properly setup and get good strings before you even think about changing stuff like that out.

They are basic Alnico Fender pickups. I doubt any of the aftermarket Alnico pickups are going to sound much different. +1 to playing it stock for a while. Personally I hate modded basses -- it's so "Honda with a big tail pipe and spoiler" to me!

well, i can vouch for the CV J - i'm very happy with mine.

like you, i got it thinking i'd swap out the pickups, but after playing it in a bit i think i'll leave them be - they sound good. if it ain't broke etc.... might get round to it one day.

for the genres of music you mention, either a P or J would do fine IMO. bear in mind the J is a bit more tweakable in terms of sounds.

if you're doing downtuned sludgy stuff, i find the bridge pickup of the J configuration gives a nice tightness to the low notes

If you were buying a used Affinity from craigslist to mod, I'd say go for it. But like Cliff said, you haven't even played a CV yet, so why are you thinking about changing the pickups?

The stock Alnico pickup in my CV 50s sounds great, and I wouldn't think of changing it -- even if someone offered me a free replacement pickup of my choice -- same goes with any of my basses.

I have owned 6 CV basses, 2 of each model. I changed pickups in 1 of them and it kinda ruined it.

It's not about liking the pickups. It's about disliking the pervasive attitude that things - like pickups - need to be changed out of an otherwise stock instrument.

You were stating that you were going to swap out the pickups on whatever bass you chose. We merely suggested that you PLAY the thing and LISTEN to it first before you decide to make any mods.

In the end, it's your bass. You want to put DiMarzios or SDs or Fralins in there, go ahead. But if you follow some well-meaning advice and play the bass in its stock form, you might be pleasantly surprised.

in any case its kind of a moot point since ill do either anyway and i am just asking opinions.

so if anyone has any info on these besides the pups or anything else to say besides "dont change them out" fine. i dont need 100 people telling me the same thing.

but thanks for the feedback its still all appreciated

And I can't see why changing them out would make them sound any better. There's absolutely NO guarantee new pups will sound better.

there shiny and new and not stock, which i tend to believe would be not as up to par as another item that was made specifically to be replaced with, in hopes its better?

i will play it stock.....i swear to the TB gods

any OTHER info?

Nobody is telling you not to change anything at all, it's your bass to do what you want with. We're just urging that you give the stock pickups a chance before you decide anything. We've all read too many stories about someone like you who changed out their pickups because they thought it would make the bass sound better (because someone told them so), only to be bitterly disappointed, and changing back to the stock pups. All we are saying, is give the stock ones a chance before you (possibly) waste money and effort on snake oil.

true enough, the stocks in my ESP are pretty great. i wouldnt want to change them. i admit i was a little premepitve in wanting to change out pickups.

anyone know how the neck handles? i read its a modern c, and i the neck on my esp is a thin U so im not sure how thick the difference would be. for sure have to make a trip to a guitar center to try this.

I'm against changing pups on a stock bass. If I buy a Fender P bass I want a p bass sound from the stock bass.
Regardingvthe fuzz thing and P and J pups.
My CV P bass gives nice, full and warm fuzz, while my Geddy jazz gives shaper, brighter and more defind fuzz tone. But what are you after?
