| D and G strings

Hello,
I use an Ibanez 5 string bass, the SR405 model. Bought it used few years back.
One of the long time problems with this bass has been having the sound punch through. My E and B string usually come out fine, however kind of dull when played along with a song, but I can still manage to differentiate it in the mix.
However my A string sometimes can be a little hard to hear and depending on the song, the D and G strings usually are very hard to hear. They seem to sound very thin and not have any body to them. No matter how I EQ I cannot seem to fix this or with effects or anything. I will try and turn my mids up, and when I can finally hear it, it drowns out the other sounds and makes the overall loudness unbearable for other people in the house. I have change my strings on several occasions, which gives me nice bright sounds, however the sound is still easily drowned out. I usually have to compensate by turning my overall bass volume up, which results in my E and B strings becoming way too loud. They don't have that nice thick smooth lead type sound I want.
I can't seem to find a good balance for how how well each string separately punches through the mix while I play.
Mind you I don't play in a band or record, I simply play for fun in my room along to tracks on my stereo, so it is pretty basic what I am trying to do here.
I run my Ibanez SR405 to my Peavey MAX 112 amp. I suspect the pickups on my bass guitar are not very good. I was looking at possibly replacing these, but I am not sure how well this would work.
I anyone has any tips or suggestions on what I can do to fix this, I would love to hear them!
