D string "click" on Fenders

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,

I have a P and a J, American standards. Lately I've noticed a "click" when I play the D string on the first 5 or 6 frets on either bass, more noticeable on the Jazz bass. Open string too. I play with my fingers, medium action. I can reproduce this click if I play hard on any of the strings, but it happens on the D string even with a medium touch.

Is my string bouncing off of a high fret maybe?

I tried raising the saddle, to no avail. I could raise the action entirely but, the action is fine for my playability. Any thoughts here?

Thank you.

It's possibly touching the polepieces of the pickup

I'll take a guess, since I have been there. You may or may not know this, but the D string has substantially more tension than the others when tuned to pitch. This led me to set the action of the D string lower than the others(without realizing it)because I tend to set action by feel, not by measuring.
I know you say you've tried raising it, but I suggest raising it a bit more.

It could be any number of things. Here are some suggestions:

1). Raise the action

2). Lower the pickup

3). Check for a high fret or two

4). Put on a new set of strings

5). Use nylon tapewound strings

6). use a lighter touch

Good luck!

7). See if one screw on the D string bridge saddle is lifting up when you play it. See if, with someone pressing down hard that saddle, the click is the same. Sometimes, over time, a bridge screw can move and the 'weight' of the string be all on one side. And sometimes you need it to look like it's angled wrong for it to balance up right!
