It's the only thing in the photo that's still in my music room
Here's the 'glamour' shot...
Next up is the Blood Red Longhorn...
Nancy Sinatra FTW!!
Both these basses are very close in age, but they have some different characteristics... The LB is a little more subdued and lends itself well to flats. In an effort to beef up up the sound, I wired the pickups in series like a big humbucker and replaced the concentric pots with regular CTS pots... Did limit the tonality somewhat, but still gets it done. While I like it for that bass, I won't be changing the other.
The BR is more aggressive right out of the gate. It was badly neglected when I got it, but a good cleaning, setup and new strings quickly put things right
While I'm not playing either of these basses out regularly right now, they both get the most rehearsal time in my music room and see stage time when the situation is right. Both are great basses and definitely keepers!

The hum does vary as you change the balance of the pickups though, which gives the appearance of the hum disappearing. Depending on where you are in relation to the source of hum, it can be that it's quieter with both on evenly. You can move somewhere else and it cancels when one of the volumes is part way up etc. That said, it is very quiet and I had to be very near an amp to get any hum.

It was $285 at The Music Zoo two days ago in Roslyn, NY, near where I used to live. Now it's $379. GC doesn't have it. It's $349 on Amazon. Anyone know another store I might buy it at? Thanks in advance.

He owns six of these and assures me it is a terrific instrument. I saw photos of it and it looks brand new. Bought the end of last year, he says. Threw in a padded gig bag, very nice guy. Can I have a number please? It should be here by next Thursday. Very excited!

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Oct 2012 Location: Ft Myers Florida | | | I just put a slightly used set of long scale elixir strings on my longhorn. On the E and A strings I had to unwind a bit of the outer string wrap to get it through the tuning post, but the other strings went on without issue. Intonation was close to perfect and the string tension is a little higher than the XL set that was on there. I cut the length to about 1 1/2 inches past the post. Has anyone else here tried long scale strings on their 30" scale basses? Tell me what your experiences were. The Elixers sound incredible on this bass! |

The stock gauges are the same as regular longscale ones. I thought they might be a fraction heavier, to compensate for the short scale, but they aren't.

I have used LaBella flats on a JJ Longhorn before. They sounded fantastic, but I don't really like flats. Tried lots of other shortscale strings, but nothing beats Elixers to me anyway. They seem to last forever! | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
