It was still in it's original packing box. The interesting thing is that this one had the pickups, neck pocket and controls already cut/routed. See a lot of them on ebay but they're always blank. neck: The neck was carved from a NOS Danelectro bass neck blank I purchased from Anthony Marc, former owner of the Danelectro name. It was just a slab of poplar with the truss rods installed and a slotted fretboard attached. Headstock was added by my luthier along with a repro Coral logo. electronics: Both pickups are original vintage Dano pickups I got in a trade from Echeverria guitars in Arizona. One pickup had no coil on it so I had the neck pickup wound to vintage specs. The pots are all 100K, just like the vintage Danos. Missing the switch tip for some reason. hardware: Tuners are vintage Kluson singles. The bridge is a rosewood replica of the original w/ a rosewood riser. Since I could never find an original, the tailpiece is just a block of brass welded to a brass strip. I have a Coral amp logo I was going to attach to it but can't find it at the moment. Pickguard, pickup surrounds, and jack plate are all white pearloid.
The whole thing was assembled/finished by luthier Bill Stultz in Martinsville, IN around 2003.
More pics: http://s717.photobucket.com/albums/w...al%20Longhorn/ | What a beauty! Those Corals are stunning! Your Luthier did a great job! Looks like the case is a very nice fit too! Thos Coral bodies were made in Japan by Kawai. I had a Danelectro violin guitar with a Kawai made body. There was a pickup under the bridge. |

Had no holes cut or drilled. Price was kind of high but not unreasonably so. I just don't have the skills to build a Coral Longhorn from scratch and don't want to pay someone who does, but it'll make a cool bass (or guitar) for whoever gets it.

| | | | Just thought I'd update with a shot of my Korean Lefty Silver Flake that I mentioned earlier. It is a full 34" scale next to the diminutive 29.75" scale '65 Dano Copper 3412. Both handsomely framed by The Silver Kustom 100 Bass amp! (1st pic with flash, 2nd without flash).

| | | | Lefty Conversion of a Danelectro 3412 Bass Hey folks. I wanted to show any lefties or "Lookie Lous" out there how I converted a vintage 1965 Danelectro 3412 Short Scale bass into a lefty (see my previous post for full pics of this bass).
I was lucky enough to come across an MIK new old stock lefty nut on Ebay and it fit in perfectly for the original nut. I think the screw size was a bit smaller on the reissue so I just used the original screw. I believe it's always best to use the original screws whenever possible so you don't strip out the holes.
Then I took one of the reissue Long Horn bass bridges with the rosewood bridge and replaced the "hanging on the edge of a cliff with only one finger" original bridge. For those of you that have a vintage Danelectro you know what I mean. I used the original 3 screws for the replacement bridge as well.
The cool thing about the Long Horn bridge is that all of the string hole sizes are the same size so I had no problem putting the E into the G. Also, I think the design of this bridge gives the bass more stability (at least string placement and tension) but it also keeps with the original rosewood bridge woody tone. I had debated on whether to get the intonatable bass bridge but in the end I think I made the right choice.
I topped off these mods with a new set of La Bella Deep Talkin' Danelectro Short Scale Bass Strings as they fit the old school tuners without any mods. The strings are super light flat wounds and are made specifically for the size and construction of this bass.
So, there you have it! I did not want to relocate the knobs or pickguard even though they are somewhat in the way. I learned to play right handed guitar upside down as a lefty so I've adapted to that scenario.
Anyway...in case any lefties out there wanted to know...Yes You Can! haha!

Interesting...I've got old D'addario XL's on mine at the moment, but I'm considering doing a string change since I switched over to balanced tension XL sets and the XL's uneven tension bugs me. Was hoping for Chromes my gauge in a short scale set, but apparently that's not going to happen.
So now what to do about the strings? Stick with XL's or try these LaBellas? The only thing that worries me about LaBellas is that they're a very bright on the top end string, which is good for tic tac but may be too intensely scoopy for a bass that's already quite scoopy.
So has any of the Dano cognoscenti ever try XL's and the LaBella flats that can give a good comparison?

If this happened in the Portaflex Club, I would have had 10 replies already Seriously, nobody has used both D'addario XL's and LaBella flats on a Dano before?
Anyway, I found what I wanted on other sites discussing the LaBellas, and it does sound like they're not the string for me on a Dano. Great on a Beatle bass, though, I will say that.

A great sound sometimes, but not what I want to hear all the time. I was wondering which was brighter, a dead set of XL's or the LaBellas, and I'm pretty well convinced now that the LaBellas are brighter. So I won't be getting them.

I switched to labella deep talking some years back on the advice of Bob Babbitt and have been very happy since. I've always wanted a Long Horn and wonder what kind of flats you'd put on it? | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
