I miss my two Jerry Jones Longhorns! I wish I had pictures of them, although it would probably make me cry when I saw it! Jerry made some top notch instruments, but the prices are through the roof now that he closed up shop.

Howdy, guys. Looking for some Dano information and I figured this would be the place to ask. I need first hand experience from you guys. So, here goes.

I'm looking into either a DC or a Hodad. This being that I can't stand the the way the longhorns look. So, anyways; I'm wondering which of the two have the most punch with good mids and a decent bottom end. Which one feels best in the neck? Would it be said that either have a fast "jazz" style neck or kinda beefy?

And I guess better so, what is wrong with either of the DC and Hodad? For you guys that play these models, what would you change about them? Do specific parts, like tuners or pots, need to be replaced to make these basses become great?

I appreciate the feedback.

I like the shorter scale Danos ( and I'm an old Pbass guy ) .

The tuners on Danos are crap , but they are part of what they are . Accept them for what they are ...

I figured as much about the tune machines. Are the dc and hodad full-scale?

I can't speak about the DC, but I have a Hodad and it has the upgraded tuners and fully adjustable bridge. And it had a great range of tones. Extremely versatile in my opinion. Slender neck and lightweight. And yes, it's a 34" scale.

New Member of the Club!

I just got a vintage 64 Silvertone. It sounds phenomenal!!! But ... it's covered in rust. What's the best way to clean it up without ruining it?

Thanks!

What parts are rusted?

Basically, if it's made of metal, it's rusted. Nothing seems rusty to the point of falling apart though.

This model's called a 63 Reissue I think.
Long scale. Got it in Auckland for a bargain.
Please see my post above & any hints appreciated.

What strings are you guys using on em?
None on mine in this pic as it's getting ready to fly to Aus with me.

It's got the stock strings on now, but was wondering if anyone's using flats or tapewounds?

labella flats. and them make some with guitar sized tuner as some dano models have.

both have some buzz issue but manageable. pups not reverse wound like j pups so no hum cancelling

DC is a neck diver, hodad is slight offset body like mosrite.

IMHO hodad has best sound,

dc in silver sparkle looks so cool. both necks are fine. hodad has real strap buttom , DC has some plastic glued in and in a strange spot on the neck.

Awesome. Thanks, Willie. I anticipated having to change a few things on it. Are the "upgraded" tuners and adj bridge something you can order with or did you have to do the work on your own?

Funny, I never found my DC to be neck-heavy.

Have me a nice Copper Burst '58 Longhorn '01 reissue and a Seafoam Green (supposed to be Aqua Blue) '56 Dolphinhead '11 Reissue.

I'm also currently building a bass that will be loaded with Dano lipstick pups, Dano stacked knobs, and a Dano bridge/saddle combo.

Also never leave home without my Dano FAB distortion pedal.

Long story short, I love Danos.

EDIT : Didn't remember I was already on the list forever ago! Hahahaha!

I am curious what some string options other then flats some of you are running?

I love the Danelectro sound and am interested in a Wild Thing. What are the factory strings similar to? What gauge?

Im thinking a light guage set of nickel rounds would be the way to go? Love that hollow growl. I wanna play some funky blues on one so bad.

I checked and my pickups are hum cancelling when both are on. That's the current Korean model Longhorn. Must be a new thing. Individually they aren't noisy, but if you get near a source of hum and then wind in the other pickup, the hum goes away.

First Gig with the '64 Silvertone tonight!

I really thought this bass would be a cool-looking back-up, but after playing it all week and everyone saying how awesomely mellow it sounds, I'm making it the starter!

(It looks a lot better now than it does in this picture from when it was for sale ...)
