Dead string - new saddle?
I'm on my third set of new strings without being completely satisfied with the low E.
When played open it sounds fine, but as soon as I start fretting notes it gets worse and worse. Almost sounds like a standup bass. The A, D, G sound great. Perfect sustain, attack, and growl, very different from the E.
The bass is my '85 G&L SB-1. The saddles are a little corroded. I lightly filed the saddle to clean the string path and it helped a little, but not completely. Also I'm using a heavy gauge. .50-.110. Is it my string gauge?
Should I order new saddles that are cleaner? I also adjusted the neck tilt a little which helped but still not where the other strings are at.
I'm just confused & frustrated!
