Ok, I'm widening my net to consider the ABZ and ABI. I've also been flirting with the idea of a 6 recently (never owned one). Maybe I should just go way outside the box and go 6 with fanned frets

I really need to see if I can play hooky and head down to San Diego to play a few.

I would say that my ABI and ABII (in passive) are hotter than any other active basses I have played.

I think my biggest adjustment was not the fanned frets, but the clarity and responsiveness. You can hear everything, which may or may not be a good thing.

I too, was interested in a Stellartone, but can't get my hands on one either.

That I'm used to - same thing with Foderas. They are brutally honest basses.

I had a Stellartone in a bass I sold and it was great. I tried it in the ABZ, it was useless.

The point of that thing is to preserve the clarity of the notes by not eating too much mids. However, Dingwalls are built with clarity in mind so the standard tone control works just fine.

Just ordered a super P. Now I need a 1-string fanned fret bass.

That Yin Yang deluxe of yours looks good enough to eat!

Early Combustion necks were more D shaped. They have been evolving to more of a C shape similar to our other models. They will always be slightly more chunky feeling but that's what we're shooting for.

You are always evolving your designs, Sheldon, which is one of the many things that keep us addicts coming back for another one!

Unfortunately our time wasn't that great, but this video has some closeups of the Super P!

Thanks for the tip on the Stellartone, that saves me some time and money. Between the blueqube, the P tone pickup and the tone control I've got tons of range.

Thanks to Rollerberg, the TI jazz flats have made the AB-1 the steady, go to bass for the past few months and I keep finding new things I like about this set up. The .136 B string is a monster.

Hey,

There is definitely a bit more reach to the first fret (especially C and F) than my Sadowsky's or the MB-2 (which I agree does play short for its 35" scale length). Never had any issues with it (but I am 6' 1", that may or may not factor in).

I don't find my ABII to be any hotter output than the Sad's (it has the Glockenklang preamp). The piezo RA is WAAAY hotter than all of them.

I don't find the "reach to the nut" to be any harder than a standard 34" Fender. Remember, the Afterburners have long horns (which pull the entire bass toward your picking hand) and are of average overall length; the bridge ends right at the edge of the bass, which means the nut isn't as far away as you'd expect.

Chiming in here about passive ABZ's.

I've had mine nearly a year now, wouldn't change one thing about it except for the color! I've been a passive-only guy for a long while, so The ABZ with series/parallel 4-way rotary selector gets me all kinds of amazing tones. When I've got the money, I'm gonna get a P-tone neck pickup. The bass is so versatile already, but I think the P-tone will put me into never-get-rid-of-it territory.

I can very happily say I'd like to join the club!!

I just picked up this 2008 ABII from a very nice gentleman on here and I'm absolutely in love. I've never felt my GAS be so weak for anything else. I'm actually feeling good about selling off much of my gear to pay for it. I'm hooked for life.

The fanned frets were very easy to adjust to, and the string spacing is fine with me too (I'm usually a 4-string player). I think the hardest thing, as has been mentioned in this thread, is the honesty of the bass and how much noise I make that other basses covered up. I think working on that will make me a better player though, so I'm excited.

I'd make this longer, but I've gotta go play my new bass! Here's a quick pic for proof (number please?):

What does the little switch positioned near the bridge do?

It's an active/passive switch for the Aguilar preamp.

Thanks for explaining my ABII doesn't have one, that's why I asked

Welcome, brother! I was admiring your new beauty in the classifieds. Simply Gorgeous. I won't caution you about how addictive Sheldon's instruments can be as you seem to have figured that out already.

Amen!

I think that Tiger Eye burls burst is one of my top two favorite Sheldon finishes, along with Stormy Monday.

BTW, dangerous, I don't think anyone has been assigning numbers here for quite some time, but welcome to the club!

I think the newer ones have a push/pull pot to go between passive and active.
