I've also been flirting with the idea of a 6 recently (never owned one). Maybe I should just go way outside the box and go 6 with fanned frets
I really need to see if I can play hooky and head down to San Diego to play a few.

I think my biggest adjustment was not the fanned frets, but the clarity and responsiveness. You can hear everything, which may or may not be a good thing.
I too, was interested in a Stellartone, but can't get my hands on one either.

| | | | I had a Stellartone in a bass I sold and it was great. I tried it in the ABZ, it was useless.
The point of that thing is to preserve the clarity of the notes by not eating too much mids. However, Dingwalls are built with clarity in mind so the standard tone control works just fine.
Just ordered a super P. Now I need a 1-string fanned fret bass.

Thanks to Rollerberg, the TI jazz flats have made the AB-1 the steady, go to bass for the past few months and I keep finding new things I like about this set up. The .136 B string is a monster.

There is definitely a bit more reach to the first fret (especially C and F) than my Sadowsky's or the MB-2 (which I agree does play short for its 35" scale length). Never had any issues with it (but I am 6' 1", that may or may not factor in).
I don't find my ABII to be any hotter output than the Sad's (it has the Glockenklang preamp). The piezo RA is WAAAY hotter than all of them.

Remember, the Afterburners have long horns (which pull the entire bass toward your picking hand) and are of average overall length; the bridge ends right at the edge of the bass, which means the nut isn't as far away as you'd expect. |

I've had mine nearly a year now, wouldn't change one thing about it except for the color! I've been a passive-only guy for a long while, so The ABZ with series/parallel 4-way rotary selector gets me all kinds of amazing tones. When I've got the money, I'm gonna get a P-tone neck pickup. The bass is so versatile already, but I think the P-tone will put me into never-get-rid-of-it territory.

I just picked up this 2008 ABII from a very nice gentleman on here and I'm absolutely in love. I've never felt my GAS be so weak for anything else. I'm actually feeling good about selling off much of my gear to pay for it. I'm hooked for life.
The fanned frets were very easy to adjust to, and the string spacing is fine with me too (I'm usually a 4-string player). I think the hardest thing, as has been mentioned in this thread, is the honesty of the bass and how much noise I make that other basses covered up. I think working on that will make me a better player though, so I'm excited.
I'd make this longer, but I've gotta go play my new bass! Here's a quick pic for proof (number please?):

I think that Tiger Eye burls burst is one of my top two favorite Sheldon finishes, along with Stormy Monday.
BTW, dangerous, I don't think anyone has been assigning numbers here for quite some time, but welcome to the club! |
