Hey GW, thanks for the report on this. If there is any way you guys could record some clips, that would be REALLY cool.

Of course, poor Sheldon is going to see this and curse you! LOL! Now we'll all be bugging him on new orders to reverse the pup!

No please don't bug Sheldon, and I am only reporting facts. Let me tell you, Sheldon is a man constantly on the move with his work, if he sees an improvement that comes from our requests then of course, provided it is possible to carry on without too many compromises he will sure do it, but you can't make Sheldon do what he can't do.

I'll find a way to record clips next time.

Indeed Sheldon and his team are very open minded and seem to get out of their way quite often fulfilling unusual requests. The simple fact that he answers our questions sets him/them apart from most companies out there.

I have to say the Super P leaves out some (now obvious) advantages of their original designs. Tuning and adjusting the truss rod isn't quite as effortless but that's the price to pay for the classic looks. It sure sounds great.

You are correct, Bob. This one appears to be gloss over ash, which I hadn't seen.

GW, I'm joking! And it is true as stated above that 1) Sheldon does try to accommodate above and beyond the call of duty; and 2) if we or he discovers a better way to an even better tone, his conscience wil not permit him to leave it be. He is a perfectionist, which is why his basses lead the field in innovation.

Unfortunately, he is also a manufacturer trying to keep the factory flowing so that it remains self-sustaining and that requires some intelligence when it comes trading off endless incremental refinements and the need for manufacturing efficiency. Sheldon seems very smart about that as well.

Ahhh. It's sometimes hard to tell with a natural finish. I know that Vintage white NAMM P is no doubt a Standard with gloss, but the lighting makes it look sort of matte.

Anyway, you may be able to order an ash body with a gloss. I've been pricing various combos with Barry, but want Alder, so I've not obtained any intelligence on that possibiity.

the reverse PU makes sense to me; would be very hard to improve on what is essentially a perfect P bass. as long as it sounds better than a normal set-up

Bass Direct here in England has a prime example of a very beautiful swamp ash black satin finish SPZ 5 which is simply gorgeous, here is a link of it

Beautiful!

I also dig the fact that it's an earlier edition with the black badge and string tree, and a different logo. I like the latest scallop, but I'm kind of a nostalgia guy or something.

I'm glad to see the positive response to the reverse pickups. Payson, its taken a while but I'm getting used to the look.

Since I had to reprogram the bodies anyway for other reasons, I re-designed the pickup cavity to accommodate standard or reverse pickup placement. Except for the really early ones all SP's have the re-designed pickup pocket.

Sheldon, do you know that aside the definite sound difference we noticed between the P pickup in my Super J/P and Dave's reversed Super P, which he totally loved and found to be a lot more defined, Dave asked me how comes my bass being chambered was a lot heavier than his not chambered? I think it is to do with the fact that the sp has a thinner body, but apart from that I couldn't explain it to Dave since both bodies are made of alder, or are they not?

My Super J/P weighs 9.48bs - Dave's Super P weighs 7.8lbs

I'm not at all a fan of fender style basses but man, that thing is nice!

Lack of a bridge pickup, battery and pre-amp would shave close to a pound off. The rest was probably the thinned body.

I want in this club. Just picked up this ABZ from a fellow TB'r. I already love it. It's pictured with my favorite bass, my Pedulla Thunderbass. The whole fanned fret thing is awesome and makes total sense. I agree it's more tough above the 12th fret and higher chording is more challenging. But I love the tone. And the low B is magnificent.

Welcome! And I agree with GW, that Thunderbass is gorgeous!

Anyone have some wiring schematics for that Afterburner XXX? Still a four way pickup selector? Or is it a five way kind of like a Strat?

I would think it is too early to know, infact only that one yellow specimen has so far seen the light of day and neither in this nor in the Dingwall forum, Sheldon has yet shed any light on the switching of it.

All we know is that is that there are 5 knobs on the body, a 3 band glockenklang preamp and the other 2 knobs would be volume and pickup selector but nothing has been said about the switching possibility of this selector, except for what Sheldon has written on his blog as follows:

"The ABXXX is a cross pollination between an Afterburner and a Z3. This one introduces a few new features including a wenge/wenge neck, 3-band eq and the new Ferrari yellow color"

It is therefore safe to assume that its gets the ABZ body with a Z3 guts and the Z3 has a the same number of control knobs (5 of them) but the ABXXX does not have the 3 mini toggle switches, so.... go figure.

To give you a rough idea as to what to expect here is the control layout of the average Z3
http://www.dingwallguitars.com/wp-co...yout-Glock.pdf

I guess in due course Sheldon will let us know exactly how this baby is wired, for the time being we can only speculate.

"Ferrari" was the first word that popped into my head when I saw the yellow one! I love the high polish automotive colors, lends a nice hot rod touch to the basses. I want one in blue chrome with a Birdseye maple board.

Hey GW, hope you recover quickly!
