Ok it might not necessarily be one of us that snatched it from you, there's a big ol' world out there.

Now I don't know where about you live in the US of A but there is a great man called Beaver Felton who has one of the largest stock of Dingwall basses in the "land of the not so free" that store is called Bass Central somewhere I'm Florida who has some very competitive prices and will ship a bass in the 52 states check out his Dingwall stock at this link: http://www.basscentral.com/2003/dingwall.shtml#5string

Actually, I spoke with Dave there. Gone, gone, and gone. In all fairness, he promised to poke around for me a bit to see what's in the pipeline. He was very nice.

And yes, I understand that it wasn't likely anyone here. Was making fun of the situation more than anything else. I should have called before getting all hopped up about it.

NOOOOO ! That will just end up costing me way more and I am pushing about as far as I'm comfortable now. Better to go with floor stock and find a nice fit. Floor stock for a boutique builder. That's an oxymoron.

Any idea what the build out time is ? I suspect it's got to be 5 months, minimum, especially after Sheldon likely went home with a pocket full of orders from NAMM.

Hi everyone!

Lately I have been interested in checking out a Dingwall. I know they sound good, at least based on YouTube videos, but my issue is that I worry that I would not be able to get used to the fanned frets. I know they are a small company, so there are not many dealers and I could order one (looking at Combustion or ABZ) but most dealers have a restock fee and I feel bad about returning things for the reason that I just wouldn't like the frets.

Anyone in the South Western/Mid Ohio Area have one that I can check out? I'd buy lunch

Actually the price for new in stock should be exactly the same as the price for the same bass special ordered. If you add options the cost goes up but for the same bass the only difference should be the wait time. Dealers know what they have ordered so maybe someone already has the bass you want in the pipeline.

When I was spec'ing a bass with Barry last year, he was saying that there was a five month wait for the Super P's. You may be correct in factoring more wait-time due to NAMM order fulfillment.

A big thank you to everyone for answering questions.

Dave did call me back. Said he needed until Monday to turn over some more rocks. Hopefully something will come together.

Watch the TB ads and be ready to pounce. Super J went up for sale yesterday. You can add a P pickup to the Super J's with a simple transplant and a new pickguard. The body is already routed for the pickup, in most cases.

I spent months looking at my Super J-5 at Jive Sound only to see it sold when I finally made up my mind. Even traded emails with Jive1. Bought it used a few months later here on TB.

I like the jazz bodies and necks myself. I don't know if I've seen a used Super P pop up yet.

Good luck and happy hunting!

I have been watching the classifieds. Not a huge fan of the one that one that went up yesterday.

The Super J's - Super P/J's are cool. I seem to be stuck on the Super P. Not ruling the others out, but really pulling for a Super P.

I'll talk to Dave again on Monday and see if anything develops.

Well we have been over the subject of Super J vs Super P/J vs Super P, and we have all agreed that if you are just after that one "go to" sound that you know will be good for you then the Super P is the tool you need, no messing about, volume knob, tone control and the world is your oyster however if you are a Jazz bass fan then the Super J is for you, and again if you want more options from one bass that's where the Super P/J comes fully equipped for.

In the end, the choice between these 3 it's all down to what you will be happy with, and whether or not you need just one sound only or a more versatile combination of.

I settled for the Super J/P and haven't regretted it. The only mod I might do later to mine is probably to have the P pickup reversed like on Dave Swift's bass because the sound he's getting from that reverse P is out of this world.

Grand I love your Super J/P. Probably my favorite of the bunch. Would love a carbon copy of it, but it is out of my financial comfort zone, especially considering that I am just a local hack. I really feel fortunate that Sheldon and crew deloped the PZ line in order to offer a high quality instrument in my price range. In this case, I am clearly the guy that is reaching. I MUST have a BMW but have to purchase a 3 series because I can't afford an M5 of M7 !

I play both P and J type basses so they both have a place in my heart. In the case of Dingwall, the Super P seems to speak to my soul.

My bind is my fault in that based on the listed available inventory a Bass Central, I assumed that I had access. Dave explained that they leave many basses up on the site that have long ago been sold, in order for people to see what's coming out of the Dingwall Shop.

My NAV Fender 63 P won't be here until May. Had I done a better job of understanding available inventory and understood that Super P's aren't really in stock anywhere, I never would have let my 62 AVRI go as I tend to use it regularly.

Hoping to get a peek at what's in the pipeline Monday and can make a decision then.

Sincere thanks Grand. You have contributed heavily throught the DW threads. Really appreciate you sharing perceptions and opinions.

Well that's a shame Bass Central has not got in stock what they display on the website, if I lived there I'd give them a piece of my mind, also a shame you don't live in UK cause our main distributor "Bass Direct" has got a couple of them presently in stock, with more to come soon

Yep, that's it !

I really am OK with Bass Central leaving basses up. I just wish they marked them as sold. In all fairness, they have a disclaimer right under some endorser comments at the top of the page in big flippin letters. I just ignore endorser commentary as I already made up my mind that I want one. Didn't need a pro to tell me that I should buy one. Here's the disclaimer.....

"*While attempting to stay current, we intentionally leave many basses up even after selling them in order to act as "catalogue" pieces to show various models, wood and finish options that are available."

I would consider ordering from across the pond but the financial beating would be sure and swift. I have to order a lot of specialized fishing gear from there and as long as they are small items and I tag team with a couple of friends, VAT and shipping stay reasonable. Big packages get ugly fast.

Worst case scenario, I will take a Lakland and Sadowky Metro for a test drive for a few months, until we see a greater number of Super P's available or they start to show up used. If I am going to have wait 6-7 months for a build, I can creep the classifieds for a fire sale.

I am really kind of embarassed about how I went about this. I'm 49 and know better. I just figured that since the market was soft and cash was still tight for many that surely I could run one down within my price range quickly. Even my wife raised her brow when I told her I let the AVRI go prior to the arrival of it's replacement. I reminded her that she flies around the house on her broom when we have have to eat Mac with no cheese after a gear purchase.

If I wasn't at home injured with a broken foot in a cast, I could possibly help you with a very BIG favour, that would include twisting a few arms and bending a few rules, but I did it before the other way around, i.e. I am a ship captain and our ships carry cargo worldwide, I bought a bass in NY had it delivered to our office in Baltimore, loaded it in the capt's cabin, (he was best man at my wedding he didn't think twice about the favour) the bass carried on from Baltimore to Lagos in Nigeria, where it was passed onto another ship again in the Master's cabin, and that ship stopped at every port along the west Africa coast, all the way to Tilbury in UK where I collected it 52 days later!

But then, all I had to do is make a list of phone calls to my colleagues in the main offices and they all loved to help me. I could possibly do it again the other way around, but... as I've said I am home bound and can't collect the bass from Bass Direct, even if you paid him today by credit card. I won't be able to take to the ship in the port, or even see the light and walk again until the end of March sadly.

Wow, thank you for the thought. Even the thought is beyond generous. An E pint for you sir ! Your gesture reminds me that we bottom dwelling bass brethren share a unique bond.

If it's meant to be it will work out. Dave is really nice guy at Bass Central. Very sincere. If there is something that can be done within reason, I am certain that he will find a way. If not, then the ball is back in my court.

Hope the hamhock heals quickly. On a positive note, with all that chair time, I suspect that your scales and modes are tighter than ten toes in a sock !

I did 18 months in a wheelchair or on crutches with a compound fib/tib break. Wouldn't wish leg problems on any kind on my worst enemy.

If you were after the natural SPZ at basscentral it's actually mine now. Sorry

By the way, someone a couple pages back asked if it was gloss - the answer is no. However they will make swamp ash bodied SP's, SJ's and ABI's (all with gloss finish) according to the 2013 price list I have.

Hey Grand Wazoo, can you describe how the reversed p pickup sounded? I ordered a super p a few weeks ago and I may ask them to do that if it really ups the tone.

Typically, the advantage of a reversed P pickup is that it moves the coils on the D and G closer to the neck, making them a bit more full, and moves the coils on the A and E closer to the bridge, making them a tad more type. Some folks - myself included - find that this results in a more balanced tone across the board, that is both full and tight. The same holds through for a 5-string, but which strings are affected can vary, depending on where they split the coils.
