Do you call it a fingerboard or a fretboard?

I've always called it a fingerboard.

Either. We all know what these terms refer to, there's no distinction.

Fretboard - When you are hanging out with your friends.
Fingerboard- When you are trying to impress your first date.

We all know what it is. It doesn't matter really, but technically it's a fingerboard fretted or fretless.

Sure there is. My fretted basses have fretboards and my fretless basses have fingerboards.

+1 Fretboard speaks for itself. It's a more specific word, indicating that the fingerboard has frets on it.

Which is exactly why it shouldn't be used when discussing a fretless bass.

Exactly. A fretboard is a fingerboard with frets on it.
