HOOKER red!
I like the way you think friend!
Of course any self respecting Hooker Red P bass would turn better tricks with a maple fingerboard...

i would base the color on the kind of sounds i want out of it (big part of it is - what kind of strings do you want on it...)

vintage color combos for flats
more modern for rounds

i think it's highly subjective, but to me, oly + tort = vintage, and red + white = modern

not the most extreme examples of either (modern or vintage), and both color combos could be either vintage or modern if I tried a little harder

For any bass, I want natural, sunburst or white. Black maybe as a distant 4th. All others would get repainted or not purchased regardless of quality. A purple Sadowsky, Fodera or F bass would go straight to the refinish shop.

+1 CAR, I don't see what's so wrong about fiesta red either, looks classic enough to me as well. as for all those that say fiesta red is basically pink...no it is not or they would have just called it pink.

I voted white for the simple reason that under colored stage lights a white instrument changes color nicely compared to any other choice.
Having said that, I don't own any white ones.

Flip a coin?

I like both, white as well as red.
Not as much as natural though and would always chose that if possible.

White, then re-sprayed with red and slightly relic'd so that the white pops thru at places.

It's less of a true, hooker red than what I'm going for...has more orange-y and / or pink-y overtones, depending on light and angle, than the ones I listed.

Besides, I'm leaning towards Oly White at this point. I mean, if it's good enough for Elvis...

Thanks for playing along, everyone!

Glad you approve! We must be kindred spirits in other ways, as I'm also a lefty playing right, though not a member of that club.

With a rosewood fretboard, I would have to go with Olympic white and Tort. I like CAR with a maple board

Some torts are very dark. I think the redder and lighter torts look better with white. As a counter-example the black scratchplates are too contrasty for my taste.

Cheers

+1

However, given a white and a CAR in the shop – if the CAR sounds better and "resonates" with me, I'd go with the CAR.

White is more versatile and fits in with any thing, ie:
Gigging Situations – weddings, funerals (N'Orleans style), B-day parties, clubs, stadiums etc;
Genres – blues, jazz, death metal, surf, country, pop, rawk, etc; Outfits – jeans & T-shirt, Tux, suit, camo shorts, sock (if you're Flea, though his was Fender was shell pink)...

Candy Apple with parchment and maple neck is my favorite-looking but my current "go to" is a trans-white-over-ash '57 with the gold guard and maple neck. Helpful huh!
