It's not totally the same design, but Alphonso Johnson played one at one point. He also more famously played a Charles Lobue fretless. Here's a link to a fansite about this:

Charles was affiliated with Alex Musical Instruments. A lot of the parts were made at the Gretsch factory, apparently.

It appears that Ralph Novak, the developer of the Novax fanned fretboard, used to work with LoBue at Alex Music in NYC. Perhaps he might have some information on this bass, too.

I'm old enough, but this is the first time I've seen one. Interesting design.

It, (they) were made by a guy named Alex Carozza in New York. A few years ago, a shop in the Village had one hanging in the window, but it wasn't for sale.

Would you be so kind as to tell me the name of the shop, or even the adress ?

There is a video on Youtube of the group "GQ" doing Disco Nights. The bassist is playing a Matador bass.

Gq - Disco Night - YouTube

I've never seen one other than the one in the video.
