ESP LTD B-4B
I have a Highway One Jazz and a Yamaha BB450. So my Jazz and P-J basses are covered (excuse the pun). So for my next bass I was thinking a neck through with active pickups and preamp would be a logical next step, I've stumbled across the ESP LTD 4-B
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/B4BNS and it looks like it might fit the bill,
So, please share your unbiased opinions ;)
A friend of mine has one of these as is main bass. Sounds great in live situations. Personally, I'd spend that $500 on a used carvin if I wanted a neck through active bass.
Good point about a Carvin, but I can't get 24 months interest free financing on a used bass. ;) That's $20.79 a month... (the wife is onboard with that).
I have the B-4Z, which I believe is the same bass with a different top (zebrawood). For me, it's perfect. It captures the exact tone I'm looking for, and the tone controls are quick and easy to work with. It plays great for me too, although if you're looking for ridiculously low action this might not work for you. But again, it goes as low I would ever realistically ask it to. Also keep in mind that this is a really thin-necked bass. I don't know about the two that you mentioned, but if you're used to a thick round neck it might be somewhat uncomfortable.
And, of course, it looks great. ;) The satin finish is flawless on my sample.
Why must your next bass be neck-thru? I don't see why that is the "next logical step".
Many so called experts say that bolt ons sound better and I tend to agree. The neck thrus I've played sound more "thuddish" to me.
Go for an active bass by all means, but I wouldn't limit yourself to neck thru only.
Thanks for the feedback. I guess I didn't make it clear in my original post, I'm not looking for opinions on the merits of neck through vs bolt on, or top load vs string through, or passive vs active, or mahogany vs alder, I'm interested in opinions on this particular bass. Someone out there must own one or played one...
