Hmmm....yeah, just checked the GF site, those DLX basses look seriously nice, not to mention that the "Fenderish" models don't have that headstock issue (for those that care). Same price range as the SX, which have been slowly creeping up....Kurt better watch his back, or come up with some new models to counter.

Yeah BUT, those with the "creeping up" prices ARE coming with better wood, as see by the SX brethren who have bought 'in', in a manner of speaking.

GF prices appear to be +$50 for the equivalent and -proven- SX Bass. Would still like to hear someone's review of a GF Bass.

So, just ordered my second Essex ((had to sell my first one a while back, but was verrrry impressed with it)) alongside a replacement neck with the old headstock. Does anyone know if those necks popping up from time to time are NOS? Or can Rondo safely get shipments of necks with those headstocks, so long as they aren't attached to a complete bass?

Just got my SX in today... I hate to say it, but I think I got a dud. The E string is dead tone wise. The others sound great, but the E string just has no brightness like the others. It's not the strings either. The binding around the neck is pretty uneven and chipped off to the wood in some places. I think I'm going to have to return this bass.

Could be the nut so if you replace it. But then most likely you can't return it if you change nuts.

It was the string was wound up incorrectly lol. I think I'm actually going to hang onto it. I bought it for the purpose of learning how to install pickups, develop woodworking skills with guidance, and not fear ruining something expensive. And anyone holding off on the SX's because of the new headstock-it's not nearly as bad as it looks online as it is in person, although I'm still going to reshape it to the normal fender one.

Agreed - the new headstock is no big deal. It helps to appreciate it for what it is instead of lamenting what it's not. It's heaps better than the fish hook canoe paddle one they had a few years back!

This is my first experience with any SX bass, and I've only seen pictures of the previous ones. To me, a bass at this price is never going to be perfect, and of all the basses at this price range, SX has come the closest. The imperfections can either not bother and be accepted because of the price, or you can do what I'm going to do and fix them yourself..... or at least I'm going to try

The old one reminded me of a dying salmon.

I'd normally take that old giant fishhook paddle over the Ursa headstock on the Fender style basses any day. However, I don't mind the new Ursa headstock on those new one piece natural ultra Ursa basses at all. I guess because it's all the same natural grain throughout, it just doesn't stick out oddly like it does on solid colour basses. It looks great, first new Ursa bass I have gassed for.
