My advice would be to do your research before you make ANY move on the bass. Read up, and learn what you're doing before you try.

I suggest filing it level and then crown and polish, and stop there.
If it is really high, the slot may not be cut deep enough, plus you are dealing with a bound maple fretboard, not a simple rosewood board, so without the experience and proper tools you are asking for trouble if you try to re fret yourself.
not trying to discorage modding or diy projects, but i'd hate to see you mess up an otherwise good neck and great looking bass!

Yeah, I had considered that, and I have a fret file coming in the mail some time next week. I think I'll do that.

Here's my new SX MM/J after rewiring and adding a coil tap switch (the little red one):

Now I can have it as MM/J, 60's J, and 70's J. Worked out pretty slick!

That's awesome! If I ever get one of those models, I'll definately be looking you up to get some tips on how to do that.

No problem - happy to help! Here's the wiring diagram I used for it. Here's the document on humbuckers I read to better understand what I was doing.

I thought for sure that the MM pup was going to be a two-wire pickup and that I would have to rewire it to make this idea work but it turns out that the MM is a nice four-wire epoxy sealed pickup! Wiring it for split was easy and I used a spdt on/off/on for the tap. It fit nicely between the jack and the dime-sized pots I used. The only issue is that the neck pup and rear MM coil aren't reverse-wound so I get hum. I'm not sure there's anything I could do about that and I just use a noise gate. This is now a nicely versatile bass! Now I just need to level out a few high frets and file the sharp fret ends and it'll be quite a player!

All the ones I've had (4 now) have been rather tight at 16 mm (about 5/8"). But I like that, so I keep buying them! I can barely play a 19mm (3/4") spaced instrument any more. Pretty sure the nut width is listed on the web page.

I like that!

Just as an aside, let me say that the little switch makes your bass look like my SX Jazz basses where I also added a switch in that position. Mine isn't a coil tap, though, but tone switch. I use a three way; On-off-On to select .015 mfd, none, and .047 mfd tone caps. I really like the way it lets you quickly switch from as bright as possible (no cap) to some preset tone setting.

Just saying.

That sounds like an interesting switch!

Question, will Carvin J99's fit (neck) in the SJB-75 neck position? Here's the pickup specs: 3.72" long x .72" wide x .80" high.

Anyone here have any experience with the Ursa "PRO" series of their jazz basses? They have the other 4 bangers with the ash body, just wondering if the upgraded tuners, pickups, and bridge at worth the extra $30? I'm leaning towards yes, because for a new set of tuners and bridge alone, you'd exceed the $30, regardless of whether of not there was much of a difference in the pickups.

I'm actually trying to sell my acoustic bass on CL right now and my intention was to get a new acoustic/electric guitar... but then I wandered over to Rondo and I reignited my GAS for one of those Jazzes! I'm expecting an Audere pre around Xmas time that I was going to put in to my 6 string SX jazz, but right now I'm contemplating one of the PRO's and dropping it in there.... hmmmmm.

I'm sure the pro's are worth the extra coin. I don't have one but would love to own one at one point.

Oof that sounds nice. Want one, but don't think I can justify another instrument right now, plus I have no fretless bass skill whatsoever and haven't a clue how to start learning.

I'm not sure how I let that post get past me... It does sound nice!

As for learning...I think it's about listening, making minor corrections and sort of adopting the attitude that you're just going to do it and not worry about it too much. And developing a nice vibrato.
