Thanks! | It's been a few years...I bought a few bags of Abalone dots and Black (plastic) dots of slightly different sizes just to experiment since I didn't know what would work. Wound up going with the Abalone. I don't remember how thick they were, but they weren't that expensive. I think I bought them from Stew-Mac.

Anyway, check em out: 4 String jazz quilt with gold hardware (eeew) & the 5 string Ash Jazz (Fish hook): | Originally they came with a "fishhook" headstock...also known as "canoe paddle". My original SX was like that. There apparently are still a few still for sale at the Spain dealer. Your other one is what we call the "old" headstock but which is obviously the "intermediate" one that was stopped from US distribution by legal action leading to the current "Ursa" headstock.
My solution to the "fishhook" was a band saw and Minwax rub-on poly.
Note I didn't even have to bother the decal by careful design! That "string tree" was something I picked up at a guitar show only to find out later it was some kind of cabinet latch part. Originally the bass had no string tree. |

I do have to say that the neck is slightly darker than the average maple you would imagine. The other pic is for comparison to my fender jazz with maple. I still love it though, adds character. I actually like the headstock too. It's nice to have something different than a fender.

I much prefer real "amateur" photos over the pro ones.
And completely unrelated, the basses in the pro photos always see to look much smaller to me than "real" ones.

I've done it before using a scotchbrite pad, but micromesh will work too, just might have to experiment to find the grit that works best. |
