EDIT:
Well, the setup is gonna have to wait a week or so, depending on how long this stuff takes to arrive.
I got the Hipshot retainer, new strap buttons (Dunlops, for my strap locked straps, didn't need to buy the whole set), and a pickup cover. I play over the neck pickup naturally (and most often) and the pickup's edges aren't very comfortable, so this'll help with that.
When it all gets here, I'll level the frets and set it up.

- take the pup out (so you don't accidentally scratch the guard or body),
- use 400 wet/dry sandpaper and simply round over the edges (corners and top and bottom)of the plastic pickup cover,
- when corners and edges are smooth and round to the touch reassemble and re-tune the bass.
- It might take all of 10 minutes and makes all the difference in the world.

I was actually thinking about putting creme colored pickup covers on there. Might look cool.
Are SX jazz pickups the same size for neck and bridge? |

Are SX jazz pickups the same size for neck and bridge? | On my SX both pickups are 3 5/8 by 1/2, same as the info on Rondo site. Be aware, Fender jazz basses tend to have slightly wider bridge pickups than neck pickups (by looking at the Seymour Duncan site actual width will vary slightly from model to model), so it would be wise to double check you actual SX pickup size against the size of the covers you're thinking about getting. Also be careful of the size and spacing of the pole piece holes. |

I've got the new strings, and all the other stuff can be added after the string change without the need for removal, so away we go.
Even with the high fret causing the D and G to buzz like crazy below the 12th fret, I still can't put this down. I really like the neck profile. It's not at thing front to back as a "real" Jazz, which is cool for me since all of my other basses are P's.
There is another thread going about whether or not its worth it to mod your basses. I've debated sending this bass back since it really isn't playable in a band situation unless I do this fretwork. Thing is, the neck has some really fantastic figuring. The whole neck has a really subtle flame, I haven't been able to get a decent pic to show it, but it's very visible. The fretboard looks just as cool, and I know I have zero chance of getting one with as good of figure, so it's a keeper. The neck itself is stable and straight, so the fretwork is a no-brainer. Luckily I don't have to pay to get it done, that would be a deal breaker.
So today I make metal dust. The wife will absolutely love that!! |

Yeah, Walking Dead is a bit of an obsession in my house. We have all the comics, all the BluRays, and I'm working on getting the rest of the books. I have the first one, need to get Road to Woodbury. |

| I've purchased several SX basses over the past few years. All of them sounded good. The frets are their weakness but since you know how to dress your own you're set. Here's one of two I kept and actually gig:
It's a nice jazz fiver, totally stock. I tried one of the newer SX 5-strings but didn't care for the new neck, it's thicker/chunkier and not nearly as nice to play. And the new heastock isn't as nice, but that didn't bother me like the new neck profile.

| | | Ok, big question for me is how does the one on the right sound with the humbucker? I've been wondering for a while. I've seen a few on here but no comments on the sound. Quote:

The way I have mine setup it's like having 8 basses in one. It's my best sounding 4 banger sx.

II understand that SX uses GFS pickups, which I've used before myself, just never the Jazz models.
I'm gonna open her up today and do the shielding, and hopefully get to the fretwork as well. My wife is having carpal tunnel surgery tomorrow, so I'll be home all week nursing her back to health. Should give me plenty of time to get this set up for next weekend's band practice. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
