Half dozen ss washers won't cost much, now 100, that's a different matter.

Very true. "What you have sitting in a coffee can in the garage" is free, and works just as well.

I just found the deal! I have a number of Dunlop Strap Locks. I took the Chrome washer from one of the strap locks and it just fits the bottom of the SX string hold down. Plus it looks like Dunlop made it special for you, cause you can read the printing all around the out side. Har har har...

Here's the "SX Effect". You can hear the low E distort when I hit it hard.

And this is what I really love about this bass:

So the SX Effect is the snapping sound at the beginning of the low note, correct? I've been trying to duplicate this on my SX jazz for the last half hour.

Yeah, it's a clipping of the pickup when you hit it hard, but it's a NASTY clipping.

Are you sure the string is not hitting the pole piece? I put gaff tape over my pole pieces, because I used to hit the pole once in awhile. Problem solved.

I don't think so but I'll cover it and see if that makes a difference.

Yeah, I put some electrical tape over my P pups..
Someone mentioned lowering the pole-pieces, and changing covers. All SX pups I have seen (about 6 or 7) have been epoxied. Covers epoxied on, and pole-pieces epoxied in place.
There was a guy (I think from KY) that used to post here, who had the pole pieces ground down flush..
I think those are the 4 pole-piece options:
1. Get used to them (adjust technique, or height of pup)
2. Tape over them
3. grind them down flush
4. replace them

Neck smaller than bridge pickup.
So the SX jazz pickups are these GFS jazz pickups advertised on their site?

No. But probably made in the same factory.

Not even close. Those are alnico pups, SX uses ceramic magnet pups.

Way back, IIRC, the best guess was that DR Parts made the pups and tuners...but with inexpensive basses like these, they could change their supplier at anytime. I wouldn't be surprised if different eras of SX's contained pups from different suppliers.

These certainly seem to be my Pbass pups:http://www.teamintlco.com/Dr.Parts/P...Product_ID=619

FWIW...DR Parts is owned buy Team International, as is SX, CNB, Gypsy Rose, & Valencia.

So these also could very well be the SX jazz pups. Or at least of a certain era

Well, if Team International has a pickup manufacturer on their list, it would be a safe assumption that they keep it in the family.

I would imagine so...and it looks like they use different sizes for the neck and bridge (brought that up because it seems like someone asked about that too).

Yup. Just measured. Pickups are different sizes like Fenders.

Just listened to it again. It's more pronounced through my speakers than my headphones. Really sounds like the string hitting the pole. There's an old thread on TB where I had the same problem, people told me it was the pole and I didn't believe it. It turned out that they were correct. I'm not saying you're wrong, but it's worth it to make absolutely certain. Of course, if the pickup doesn't sound good when you drop it low enough to prevent it then it's all academic anyway. I seem to recall someone mentioning clear nail polish over the poles to prevent it. Might be worth a search.

Ill slap some electrical tape over the pile pieces before I plug in next. That will fix it if that's what it is.

That rings a bell. I wish I could remember more about it.

Okay cool. I heard somewhere that they were the same size. Which I thought stinks cause I wanna mod mine without hassle.

Mine should be here today. Hopefully after work I have a box to crack open.
