Ever buy a bass you wanted to love but couldn't?

I've always loved warwicks and there sounds and loved playing them at the local Guitar Center. I came across a used 2006 Corvette Standard for $499 w gig bag so i piddled on it for a few and bought it for that price I was sold, it was my dream bass. Have it home and playing it next to my Ibanez Sr700 and 500 i'm not happy. I want to love this bass I really do, but the bass seems lifeless and blah good for a nice growl which this has plenty of it sounds great down low but when I wanna throw in some mids or highs its lifeless where as the Ibanez have plenty of life throughout. I really wanna love this bass but I dont think I can.

Try changing strings before you make up your mind. If you end up not liking it and want to trade let me know.

Jazz basses. I've been through 4 now and have yet to find one that I like. Me and them just don't go together at all, which is interesting considering that a lot of my favorite basslines were recorded with J basses.

Nope. If I don't love it, if I don't love it I sell it ASAP. Heck, there are basses that I love and sell just because .

Yep, sold my AVRI Jazz Bass too. Jazzes just sound too thin to me. It sure looked and played great though

My Epiphone Ripper and my 5 string Jazz immediately come to mind. I think it happens all the time during the search for "your sound."

Just unload it and keep looking. It's half the fun.

Yamaha TRB. Great playing bass but not the sound I was looking for.

I've had 4 Rickenbacker 4003's/4001's over the years, and every time I've sold it. Ergonomically they're just too uncomfortable for me, but I just love the way they look. I keep getting sucked in.

I've been through two Musicman Sterlings (single H). I LOVE the look and feel of them. They always sound great to me....until you get them in a rock band setting. They never seem to cut through in the mix for me. I want to love them so much but have yet to find one that works for me.

EB/MM Stingrays.... owned a couple before I decided "That 'Ray sound" just doesn't do anything for me.

I found that too with the ones I've had. Love the feel, the balance, the neck..everything was perfect except they just get lost in the mix no matter how they're EQ'd. If they came with a choice of different pickups they'd be much better, IMO. The double pickup models are better though.

I once had a bass with frets. Irreconcilable differences.

I very nearly bought a 1969 Jazz bass that a good friend owned. It was in many ways the ultimate vintage Fender I'd dreamed of owning: late '60s (I was born in 1968 ) sunburst/RW with blocks. All original, with just the right amount of wear. Great price from a guy I trust completely.

I even had the green light from my wife to buy it. But I took it out to a gig and decided I liked the sound and feel of my Sadowsky better in the mix. My band liked the Sadowsky tone better as well.

Too bad. I really, really wanted to fall in love with that bass. But it largely cured me of GAS for a vintage Fender, I guess.

I have an ’02 EBMM StingRay 4 with a piezo that I just can’t make “work”.
It’s me, not the bass; I can’t make short scales sound right either. I bought it used a couple years ago, gigged her a couple of times and for some reason just wasn’t “connecting” with the bass; I even sent it back to its birthplace in SLO and had them go through it. They put fresh strings on her, set it up, tested everything, and replaced the battery box “just in case”.

Clean bill of health; like I said, it’s me. A real shame, I like everything about it except how it sits in the mix when I gig her. I don’t really want to sell it, I like how it looks, plays, and sounds when I play it by itself.

Very frustrating.

Dan Armstrong ADA4 RI. Plays great, but doesn't sound right for me. Greg Ginn still rules though.
