...know you probably wont' be able to take advantage of it in time?

There's a bass I've wanted for a while now, it's for sale in GC's used gear at a stupid-low price. But it would cost 2/3rds of a pay check for me. And I need that money to, ya know, eat.

I hope that by some miracle I wind up with the money to buy it before it gets snatched up.

I just saw the bridge of my dreams on ebay, but the guy didn't answer my question about it for several days, so I gave up on it. He answered me right as the auction ended, so I missed out. I am somewhat devastated by this.

Right but how long would they be willing to hold it?

If it was the kind of layaway where I could just come and make payments here and there, that'd work. But if it's just putting a deposit down and then paying the rest of it, they'd have to be willing to hold it for a couple of months.

Not to preach to you but learn how to use your money wisely first. Deals will come up in the future. Theres no need to buy a bass if you can't afford it. Take cre if your needs first and save up for your wants. It'll be worth it in the end.

I've seen a lot of posts like this one, where the person is saying they don't know if they'll have cash available by such and such a time. My question - why don't you have a credit card? I got one within a few months of getting my first job when I was a teenager. No annual fee, and I never carry a balance from month to month. I'm not saying you have to use it for everything, or even use it sparingly, but why not have one for a situation like the one you're in now?

Ever see a deal of the century but...

Yep, the MF 4003 MID sale, but I bought mine last year, and don't need another.
It's cool to see so many other folks get nice deals, though.

If it is a bass that you REALLY want, I would as if they could do layway or something. But if you only want it because it is a deal, I would say to pass and save money. From your profile, you have 1 bass, so you could definitely use 2.

Eating is over-rated. You'll have time to catch up later.

IME, buying stuff before you can afford it just sets you up for trouble, and if you are not careful, you will end up selling what you bought at a loss.

/\ this...

and once you start to live that way you'll find its very difficult to get out of the trend. Learning from your mistakes can take a lot of time and to make matters worse, one little hiccup (like going from 1600$ a week to $550 a week) can really slap you in the go-nads and keep you down for a long time. Most things I own are owed on. My bass is not. nor is it collateral anywhere. When they take everything, they won't take my 200$ bargain bin chinese warwick.

She's all mine.

Eating is relative. I'm in a down cycle right now as far as income, and you truly can eat for a few bucks a day. Ramen, bologna, tomato soup, banquet tv dinners. Ramen's like 18 cents a pack. A banquet meal is 88 cents. If I really wanted something I'd have no problem eating on about 4 dollars a day.

Don't worry, I don't every try to spend money I don't have. That's why I don't have a credit card. I don't want to be one of those people that has thousands of dollars of debt.

@SwagAttack: It's definitely a bass that I want for the bass. Plus, it's a discontinued model.

That's exactly how I feel right now. Under normal circumstances, I could totally buy these two gorgeous 6-strings I've been eying for a while. Unfortunately, my school schedule doesn't allow for full-time work, so I have to cry myself to sleep now and hope that the degrees pay off later.

Forget miracles! How many people think winning the lottery will "solve" all their problems. Yeah it would, but it also will never happen and in the meantime they go down the toilet!

But hey 2/3s of a paycheck ain't bad. Ask yourself the question what percentage of the paycheck could you extract if you REALLY cut things back? Even if it's only 1/6 that means in 4 paychecks you have the cash!

But understand the following rule: Ya Snooze, Ya Lose! This ONLY applies to stupid-low ultra special bargains. It WILL NOT be there when you return! If you recognize a stupid-cheap deal, so will many others! Hence in the future, when you see the deal, STRIKE! Yep, use a credit card or layaway or whatever to get your paws on it and then use cut-backs to pay for it.

And let me warn you that these methods should ONLY be applied to those special one-time deals that come up every so often. Using a credit card to buy a full priced brand new Alembic or the like is just ASKING for trouble unless you can pay it all off next billing period! Don't do it.

If you really think it is a deal, and it won't come around again, I would honestly take the risk. If you know you are going to have a steady income, buy it, but then save up and don't spend money on anything big for a while.

I am super curious what to the bass is though. No one is going to take your deal.
