It's no different than any other tele bass.
They just narrowed the horns because the body shape is more sleek than the original slab style.

True, and I feel that way about all of them. Why would an expensive instrument have a control plate and pickguard that overlap? It looks like spare parts thrown together. Wouldn't make any difference to me if I liked the way a bass sounded and felt, but the looks lack for me. |

Personally I see nothing wrong with it, but it's what I'm used to seeing.

The contour doesn't affect it, same one fits the contoured 55 (like the CS reissues or the Sting model).

I want to try it out in person.
I do like the looks, much better than the PG on the later Ps.
If it had a Tele head stock and a single coil pickup, it would move from the “I like it and can afford it” category into the “I really want it arena”.

The 51 slab body doesn't have rounded edges, and i'm prettysure with that original pickguard it would hang over the rounded edges. http://www.fender.com/themes/product...ass_front2.jpg Plus over all i think it just makes the bass look more modern.

Check out my CS '55:

I guess because they could? More than likely like i said to make it more modern. It makes it a cross between the pickguard on a split coil p bass and the traditional.
