Question Extreme temperatures and nitro finish

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm receiving a bass today that has nitro finish. It's been en route to to Kansas City for the past week from the upper west coast.

Reading about nitro finish and temperatures changes has me spooked about opening the case right away.

It's an unseasonably warm 50 degrees here today... How long (if at all) do you think should I wait?

A couple hours indoors should be safe I would think. How long do you honestly think you can wait before you open it??

Not nitro but I just bought a P-bass. It was on a truck for a day in NJ where it's cold and dry. I let the box sit in my home for 3 hours as I paced like a nutcase, finally I opened the box, felt that the gig bag with room temp. and continued to open the rest no worries.

I have seen a product of not waiting. A friend lived in the midwest had a bass shipped ground, if was left on his porch in the cold all morning, he immediately opened it and the finished spider webbed and you could've easily peeled big chunks off of it.

Well, I received the bass and decided not to open it immediately. I lasted 2 hours. But when I finally opened it, everything was fine!

I didn't wait when I opened mine on December 24th, but I was home and got it as soon as fedex arrived. The bass wasn't even cold, just out of tune.

There were 2 'new bass' posts in this thread with no pics. What's up with that?

If it's 50 outside then you are fine. An instrument can take a 20 degree temperature change no problem. In order to cause any harm it needs to be extremem and quick. People that intentionally relic will go from freezer to heat source in seconds. And not room temperature either.....an additional heat source. I understand caution and if it worries people then waiting is a good policy but I always open them immediately and have never had an issue with any nitro finish including acoustic guitars.

I snapped a couple of pics of mine on the way out the door this morning. '62 AVRI built in 2007. It's in perfect condition and plays great!
