F-Bass BN5/Alleva Coppolo LM5/Sadowski MV5 VTC : cut through mix

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, is there anyone among you who has expierence with (one of) these basses and can tell me how they cut through the mix in a band that is mostly playing Swamp-Rock (CCR style)?
I never played either of these basses and I'm not in the capebility of doing so.
So any input is welcome!!!!

Thanks!

Just about any good bass can be heard clearly in the mix with the right EQ and these guys aren't known for making bad basses. The important part in this particular is whether or not you dig the tone. You've got two jazz basses and and very jazz inspired bass and each one sounds a bit different from the other. It's late so I'll leave the tonal descriptions to someone else, lol. Of course, there's always Youtube.

OK, I understand : So I can add to the question that I play in a CCR Coverband and an All-round coverband (mostly '70s, 80's and 90's music). So my second question could be: Which of these three basses will suits me best for the job and cuts through the mix very good?

I have owned them all and IMO purely from a cut through the mix stand point I would say the Sadowsky or BN5 as they both lean towards the hi fi side,if your all about the classic tone of CCR and bread and butter classic Fender tone of the late sixties and seventies than Alleva is tops and totally nails it.
All are incredible bass and all will lay and the mix wonderfully.

If you want to nail the CCR tone then why even get a modern boutique bass?

It's a trade deal and the three basses I mentioned are the options... that's why!

Ah, that makes sense. I would agree with jonno that the more modern-style basses will cut better, but the Alleva will be more authentic-sounding.

OK! but it's not only CCR.... I know we play a lot of CCR, but with the other band we also play, reaggae, disco, pop, rock,...

Am I right when I understand the AC is more limited in tone but more "vintage" than the other two?

That's the intention of its design. If it was me in your shoes, I think I'd go with the Sadowsky, as it will cut through the way you want, while still looking very traditional, and covering the traditional sound close enough with that VTC.

Well my 2 cents are, though not among your options the number 1 bass that cuts above ALL of your choices and other high end basses I have played--Smith, Tobias, Spector, Modulus Graphite, Pedulla, yes even Fodera--is the
humble Fender Custom Classic with an ash body and a maple fingerboard OR with an alder body and maple fingerboard.

Not on any bass have I noticed the pronouncement and distinction between the maple board versus the pau ferro board. The MAPLE board is the "LATHE". It cuts with a tremendous effortless slap sound and a finger tone to die for. Very very articulate

This is not only my opinion but from others, co-musicians, sound techs, and yes, even the audience themselves. I listen to recordings back of the Custom Classic against Alleva and Sadowsky and--well the CC wins every time in definition-though not quite as round as say, the Alleva.

I have 3 Alleva basses. All very fine instruments in their own right, but for "CUT"--the Fender Custom Classic is tops IMHO.

Lastly, the Custom Classic I feel is highly under-rated and too, the preamp may not be as versatile as the other basses and the Low B may not be as precise per se, BUT overall those basses smoke.....particularly when you consider their cost....somewhat rare now also as general production has ceased.

Keep on "Rollin' On A River"
