Fake or real. Tuners have been changed and body refinish. The rest is original. But no chrome covers or thumb rest. A real 1976?? |

Take off the neck and look at the stamping.
Also the logo does look wrong...

That are in the $1700-2100 range roughly and you could build something just like for a $1K

Around 1975 or so they changed to the three-bolt neck and the bullet truss rod at the headstock, and the logo changed slightly. They changed the tuners, too. This logo shown by the OP looks like the correct style (I can't say if it's genuine), and it does have the chrome bullet truss adjustment, which would be a bit more difficult to fake than a decal. Fender also changed the tuners when they changed the neck bolt pattern, and from the tuner shaft length, these tuners look like the ones Fender used from about 1967 to about 1975. OP said the tuners have been replaced and the body has been refinished (so no way to tell about holes for the bridge cover. If the neck attachment is three-bolt (which it should be, according to the truss rod and logo), it very well could be real.
EDIT: The logo is the correct size and the "Jazz Bass" lettering is correct, but there's no "made in USA" under "Jazz Bass" and no serial number under "Fender". But the truss is there, and again, that's a lot of work to fake. Tough call... could be an MIJ '75RI neck with the letters that would identify it as such rubbed off. The body has correct 70s bridge pickup location, so not an MIJ '75RI body, even if the neck is.

If there was no proper plate, I would be a lot more suspisious.

There were a few made that looked like this - note serial number under 'Fender"
However, with Fender the rule is Never say Never, so check the neck plate for a serial number.

| | vintage bass nut John K Custom Basses | | Join Date: Feb 2008 Location: Thousand Oaks, CA | | | the decals weren't always in the same exact location, but that one does look suspiciously high. the neck on the OP's 'mystery bass' looks mostly correct, and i believe that it's a genuine vintage fender j bass neck, however the body doesn't look like a vintage '76 j bass to me. in the pic, the rounding on the edges looks too tight and crisp with too small of a radius in that photo.
and obviously the pickguard isn't original. (as well as the knobs).

| | | | So, if there's a three-bolt F plate with number 5 or 6 beginning the serial, it might be real? | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
