Fake Stingray? What is this?

Sign in to disble this ad
This showed up on a local music forum in the for sale section. It is being sold as a late 1990s Musicman Stingray.

Now, I own a 1996 EBMM SR4, and that looks nothing like an
SR to me. However, I am curious to know what it actually is. So many things are off. The control plate shape is off, the headstock shape is off. Pickguard shape is off. The bridge makes me cringe. It is, however stamped, but not in any way I have seen a Musicman bridge.

Is it just a bad fake? I am not particularly knowledgeable about the history of MM, is this something else instead? Anyone have a clue?

The bridge is stamped, but I'd not give that much credence.

Looks like a copy with an EB decal to me

It's a fake. The hold down is also incorrect. And the nut appears to be crooked.

No way that is a Stingray, not even close.

a real Sting Ray below: look at the "boomerang" shaped control plate and the bridge details... in addition, the fake above has 22 frets, while a standard Sting Ray has 21!!!

A picture is worth a thousand words. My new Ray has the pup slightly more toward the neck.

I have been searching for one exactly like that one, but could only find these that are close. If it came from China.

MusicMan StingRay
In White, about 140 USD

Musicman
In Black, about 50 USD

Now these are obviously fakes, and the ad says so. But if someone were to try to pass these off somewhere else as originals to an unsuspecting buyer...

What I did was to post a reply to the thread advising all prospective buyers of the bass to do their research on 1990s EBMM SR before they commit to buying. Should be enough of a hint. I am not particularly interested in getting into a accusation on something that does not affect me personally.

the China ones shown above show at least some degree of "industrialisation; if you look at the bridge of the auction, it shows a very poor realisation. The bottom panel that retains the strings is not even parallel to the beginning line of the bridge!!!

I was gonna say, the one's in the China website at least looks like its properly made by people who know what a Stingray looks like. I suspect it is an OLP that fell off the back of a truck and got a rebadge.

I am pretty sure they ALL have the pickup at the same location...

An OLP looks a lot more like a Stingray than that thing above. At least they get the control plate shaped correctly :-)

If I could read Chinese, I'd be interested in trying one of those out just to see how they compare to my real one. Curiosity has gotten the better of me, I suppose.

the main factor is: when you look at a real Sting Ray your mouth smiles and you can't help but feeling... naturally attracted; if you look at that eew... thing you just feel natural repulsion feelings pouring out from your eyes/ears/nose...

I'll tell you what that is.....Fire Wood! Actually you'd be better off slappin' some twine onto a Presto log then to play that thing.
