Falling Knobs

I'm corresponding with a guy on CL about a 2008 Fender MIM 60s jazz bass, and he has informed me that, at one point, the knobs had to be replaced because they "fell off". Could this have happened on it own, or is it evidence of some major trauma to the bass at some point?

The knobs are held in by set screws...at least the ones on my MIM 70's Classic are. I like to set the little white lines all to 12:00 high when they're dimed. If they're not properly re-secured, they will "fall off."

It's possible that the current owner did something similar, but without photos, it's also possible that he treated his bass like a rented mule.

He sent me a pic in which the bass appears to be in good condition. Must have been a case of loose screws then. Although I find it rather suspicious that he had to have the knobs "replaced" if they simply fell off. Surely he would have been able to just screw them back on rather than having to buy completely new knobs. I'll have to go have a look in person...

Perhaps its the same person who awhile back had to ask how to attach knobs back on cause didnt know to look for the set screw to tighten?

If the 60s Jazz knobs are held on by little grub screws like the P-bass barrel knobs, it's not unfeasible for them to work themselves loose over time, especially if they are operated a lot.

It's quite possible he simply didn't know that.

Its is possible they fell off without his knowing, he might not have noticed until later and couldn't find them. As for massive trauma, my bass is cracked all the way through the body where the knobs are from falling on its face and the knobs are perfectly fine.

The tone knob on my squier 60's cv-P fell apart , the metal thingy fell from the plastic thingy , and well , thats what I've experienced with cheap knobs , but if a bass has knobs with screws (as said earlier) they won't (or shouldn't) fall

my Three Cents
