Can someone explain the point of fanned frets to me? All I know is that they look weird and annoy me.

To each their own.... I HATE them but two of my bass playing buddies love them.

Try one out (ideally a Dingwall) and see what you think....

Never had the chance to play one but they look great IMO.

The theory behind them makes perfect sense to me too.

It's about sound, not looks.

I think it's actually more about feel to me. Ergonomically it's better on the left hand too. The even tension is the big selling point to me, even string to string tone is another advantage.

Sorry they annoy you, they have the opposite effect for me.

I think you really need to try one with your hands and ears not just your eyes.

Does anyone make a cheaper fanned fret bass than the Dingwall sort of level? It's an intriguing idea but I imagine the cost and lack of mass-market appeal probably means the mainstream manufacturers avoid them.

Expecting a mass production import company to make one isn't going to happen. Dingwall's Combustion is about as cheap as it will get for the moment.

Even though I am not a fan, the ability to have a 36-38" scale length B string is amazing. I have yet to hear a B string sound as good as the one on my old Dingwall.

Just playing a regular fiver discourages many sit ins.

Now a fanned-fretted fiver…

One word. DINGWALL. All the info is there.
I tried a Dingwall Super J4. Wicked bass, the fan frets were a bit daunting but no big deal.

I am so gasing for a Dinwall!! OMG. They just really seem to be cool to play. Where I am located, there is no such thing as going to a store to try one out. Buy one and give it a whirl.. As soon as I come out of this winter season, a Dingwall is on my agenda..

FROM THE DINGWALL SITE:

5) You will no longer be unheard and ignored by your audience due to the combination of the longer scale low strings and the even tonality across all the strings.

LMFAO! Seriously.....

I love my Combustion - the tone overall is the best of any bass I've played. I'd buy a fretless Z in a heartbeat, but I can only sell so many organs...

I keep hoping Kurt over at Rondo will do a multiscale bass, seems like he'd be able to get one out at around $500 - $600. It boggles my mind that he has 7 string multiscale guitars but nothing in a multiscale bass. Also, seeing an instrument on that site for $1300 made me do a double take.
