I know, there has been a thread on this already. However, we had my GTG yesterday at Russo Music in Asbury Park, NJ. We featured the new Fano bass. Got to see it up close and play around with it.
A very sweet bass. Price is doable, given what it has in it.
Plus:
1. Thin, jazz like neck, slightly thinner profile. My little stubs moved effortlessly across the fret board.
2. Hipshot bridge and vintage style tuners. Well made, good quality. Held tune perfectly.
3. TV Jones Thundertron Pickups. Great power, good range.
4. Stellartone tonestyler. Not quite as dynamic as I've read, but definitely one of the best overall tone pots I've played. By varying the pickups and rolling off a little of the highs you could get a very Jaco tone, rolling off all the highs actually gave it a sound between a vintage hollowbody and an upright.
Minus:
1. Neck heavy. Definitely would take a dive. Its styled after the "reverse" Thunderbird body and the neck is inbetween a thunderbird and a vintage Dano. So some neck dive.
2. The relicing was done well, but everyone agreed the faux relic finish on the neck was too laquered. At times it didn't feel "worn"
3. Tonestyler - again, didn't quite amaze me as much as all the advertisements and write ups did. Versatile but not that much more then an normal tone circuit.
4. Price - given its high points, its about $200-$400 high.
As you know I am not a fan of relic-ing a bass. This one looked like it was old, but didn't feel old due to the finish.
Overall I'll give it an 8 out of 10. If you are in the market for something different and good quality, US made, this one is one to consider.
I'm sure the guys at Russo will work with anyone on price (not an advertisement, just they actually are a dealer and have one in the blue in stock.)
