Favorite Jazz bass tone?

What bassist, or bassists, have the best Jazz bass tone, in your opinion? I'm on a quest for tone, and am trying to define THE Jazz bass tone.

Anything with Jaco for the classic bridge position pickup sound. Anything with Marcus Miller but ESP the live We Want Miles -Miles Davis album for the slap tone. Tim Commorford's (sp?) work in Audioslave for an awesome rock J bass tone. GeDDy Lee on the current live album is killer also for that both pickups wide open sound.

Hahahaha I knew this was coming. You ask guys on TB to state their opinion, and suddenly they want dictionary definitions
I'm just playing, but really, I just want opinions.

Juan Alderte from the Mars Volta nails an awesome Jazz Bass tone. I agree also on Timmy C.

Jaco on The Birthday Concert.

For anyone that hasn't heard that album, do yourself a favor and check it out. He has a fat, throaty sound that is very different from the thinner bridge tone he is normally associated with.

I swear sometimes I think the word "best" should be banned from TB.

imo there are lots of J bass players with great tone, too many to list actually.

Jaco Pastorius (especially his Joni Mitchell period)
Mark Egan (early Pat Metheny Group period)
John Paul Jones (early Zep period)

Some recordings I have done with a '72 AV Jazz Bass comes to mind.

What's freakin awesome with the jazz is that it can sound so different with just a few tweaks. It can go from Marcus Miller to Aston Family man ....how cool is that.

Tone : cranked
Back Pickup : cranked
Front Pickup : off

The bass is a piece of garbage with a screwed up neck though:
