What bassist, or bassists, have the best Jazz bass tone, in your opinion? I'm on a quest for tone, and am trying to define THE Jazz bass tone.

Anything with Marcus Miller but ESP the live We Want Miles -Miles Davis album for the slap tone. Tim Commorford's (sp?) work in Audioslave for an awesome rock J bass tone. GeDDy Lee on the current live album is killer also for that both pickups wide open sound.

For anyone that hasn't heard that album, do yourself a favor and check it out. He has a fat, throaty sound that is very different from the thinner bridge tone he is normally associated with. |

imo there are lots of J bass players with great tone, too many to list actually.

Jaco Pastorius (especially his Joni Mitchell period)
Mark Egan (early Pat Metheny Group period)
John Paul Jones (early Zep period)
Some recordings I have done with a '72 AV Jazz Bass comes to mind.
