I <3 Fenders. ESPECIALLY old ones, and ESPECIALLY beat up ones. That 72 is BEAUTIFUL.

Are these even comparable?

The questions I'd ask are:

1. Why? Is the Jazz simply not doing it for you? Not enough tonal options that would necessitate an onboard preamp?

2. Do you require a 5 string for anything you do?

3. If the Fbass is going to replace your jazz in whatever music you're currently playing- is the preamp even going to be useful to you? I mean- you use a passive jazz... is that Fbass going to sound out of place being a 'modern' sound?

4. Are you going to keep either the Jazz or the Fbass for the next 10 years? If so- which is going to be more valuable- both monetarily and more valuable to the music you'll be playing.

I almost can't think of two completely different basses- I'm sure they're both great instruments, it's a matter of what you'll use.

I'd call it fresh. As in it looks like it's still a tree. It's got that big leafy section on the back, a nice lookin' plank of trunk in the middle and a little bit of root at the bottom...

I'd take the jazz all the way, but I'm a sucker for blocks and binding and I love the worn in feel of a nice old jazz bass. Plus I don't like active basses and get sick of 5 strings about a day after I get them so definitely not my cup of tea.

Need a low B? if not then stick with the 72. The Fbass is sweet and if you like the sound and playability of it then go for it, however, the 72 will be much more difficult to replace.

I voted for the F Bass. They are extremely well made instruments that will allow you to get a wide variety of sounds.

This is an apples-and-oranges thing, dude. Do you want a 4 string or a 5?

(Full disclosure: I'm a huge fan of Fbass instruments.)

Vintage jazz basses are all over the place... but can not be reproduced

F basses can be made to order anytime to exactly how you want it...

You can always get another one of either bass anytime...

If you feel the need for a change, make the change... you can get either one again with some $ in the future.

I was the 16th person to say "FBass." I just got turned onto the brand this past year, got a BN5 for myself. Very impressed. If I was standing in a room with these two present I wouldn't notice the other bass.

Solid advice. I'd be willing to bet you'd regret selling that 72 Jazz like a LOT of guys on this forum. Especially for something that will not gain as much value over the years.

But then again, play which bass works best for the style of music you play

Need to add that the price of the fender especially once the economy comes back will just go up.

And a good playing fender jazz with good body weight is hard to find...

I like Jazz basses - especially with blocks/binding...

The Fender will hold it's value & likely appreciate...

but the Fbass wins!!!! - any day, any time, any place & by quite a stretch too!

P.S. - QUALIFIER:
I don't have an actual 70's Jazz at the moment (just lots of newer Fenders including 70's reissues - I do have a BN5 & a VF5)
