The questions I'd ask are:
1. Why? Is the Jazz simply not doing it for you? Not enough tonal options that would necessitate an onboard preamp?
2. Do you require a 5 string for anything you do?
3. If the Fbass is going to replace your jazz in whatever music you're currently playing- is the preamp even going to be useful to you? I mean- you use a passive jazz... is that Fbass going to sound out of place being a 'modern' sound?
4. Are you going to keep either the Jazz or the Fbass for the next 10 years? If so- which is going to be more valuable- both monetarily and more valuable to the music you'll be playing.
I almost can't think of two completely different basses- I'm sure they're both great instruments, it's a matter of what you'll use. |

I'd take the jazz all the way, but I'm a sucker for blocks and binding and I love the worn in feel of a nice old jazz bass. Plus I don't like active basses and get sick of 5 strings about a day after I get them so definitely not my cup of tea. |

(Full disclosure: I'm a huge fan of Fbass instruments.) |

F basses can be made to order anytime to exactly how you want it...
You can always get another one of either bass anytime...
If you feel the need for a change, make the change... you can get either one again with some $ in the future. |

But then again, play which bass works best for the style of music you play

And a good playing fender jazz with good body weight is hard to find... |

The Fender will hold it's value & likely appreciate...
but the Fbass wins!!!! - any day, any time, any place & by quite a stretch too!
P.S. - QUALIFIER:
I don't have an actual 70's Jazz at the moment (just lots of newer Fenders including 70's reissues - I do have a BN5 & a VF5) | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
