what bass compliments the MIJ fender 51 p bass re issue's weaknesses? i always like to have 2 basses, so that they both stand out in certain places, can cover each other's hazy spots and at the same time have some stuff in common (think of a venn diagram) i usually don't like owning only 1 bass because i think "oh man this could really use some ____" or "i wish this could play some ______ better" NO MATTER WHAT BASS I GET. it just feels more natural to switch basses like switching styles. i was thinking the MIJ RI would cover the classic rock/punk ground (being that 2 of the ppl that helped me stumble upon it in the first place was mike dirnt and sting), and then something that could be more centred around jazz, funk, and slapping. i was thinking of a MM Stingray or Sterling, but then again that's just a thought. any suggestions/ would stingray/MIJ RI 51 be a good combo?
now i like suggestions but i don't like anything that concerns with the following
1. don't suggest anything else fender.jazz basses, p basses, just don't say it, i won't get it. the MIJ (and maybe the aerodyne) are the only exceptions to a company which i loath (and i probably would get the aerodyne if it wasnt for the fact that 2 fenders kinda makes me look like a mainstream fender addict)
2. don't say "1 guitar should fit all" or "why don't you just get _____ instead of 2" like i said, i feel more comfortable with the feeling of two guitars. it's like having 2 wives. if you get bored with one switch to the other and you'll be fine. (of course i'm not seroius about the wife thing haha)
thx guys.
edit: what do you think of the 51 RI/Aerodyne combo? would aerodyne be good for slapping., just wondering, probably wouldn't go out with that combo |

Lakland Skyline 44-60 maybe ? |

The nerve...
But since you asked so nicely, a higher-end Ibanez SR or SRA series with Barts has always worked well for me when I want to be un-Fender.
The fat and flat tonal response means you can EQ whatever sound you need.
And the easy playability is a nice mini-vacation for the fingers while doing shots of Jack Daniels.
But I don't slap or twang or any of those other things; I just play the simple notes I get paid for.
Sounds to me like you want something that doesn't look anything like a Fender.
A Cort T74 recently knocked my socks clean off. You might be surprised by how they can sound and play.
And the body is almost Ric shaped, but with a prettier wood top, and at a great price.
EMG pickups.
Sustain for days...
Just a thought.

honestly if you got a split-coil P you'd find there were enough difference betwixt the two to justify owning both.

That said, I pair it with an old fretless Ibanez with a Nordstrand jazz pickup strung with flats. |
