So I am thinking about a P Bass for my collection and a guy has the 60th anniversary on my local craigslist at $300. The price seems right, but I am not sure how I feel about it. It's a nice bass but I am a player, not a collector. Is this a playable bass that people can gig with or this a 'hang it on the wall and hope it becomes worth something' bass?
Thanks,

A few things, and if I'm incorrect on this, someone please correct me -
A. 60th Anniv. P-bass hasn't been released yet.
B. It will be a Custom Shop bass, so even used it's gonna be at least a couple of thousand bucks.
So, unless I've got my 60th anniversary P-basses mixed up, this sounds like a rip-off.

Is it MIM? That's not a bad price. And, if it's a good one, yes it's a player more than a collectible...

I didn't know about the one you're talking about, I probably should have.
Someone at the Fender forums posted this pic of thecoming 60th anniv. CS reissue, supposedly lifted from Fender's Twitter feed :
Whaddaya think, maybe $3000+? This why is I was suspicious (without foundation, apparently).

Who knows, maybe 20 years from now it will be a collector's feature, but for now, it's a player...

Just because it has a 60th anniversary button on the back doesn't mean jack beyond that it was made in 2006.
The real 60th anniversarys from 2006 have a fake diamong inlay on the front of the headstock and a special case. They are really nice basses. I woned a MIA Jazz and loved it.
The bass you are looking at is likely a standard 2006 MIM Fender at a fair price.

It seems like a great bass. Are the ones with the diamond inlay nicer in some way? |

Thanks,
- netgeist | A precision bass for $300 - is a good deal, regardless of the controversial "60th anniversary" debate. It is definately a giggable bass. Precision basses are used by many many players worldwide, which is some indication of their appeal and versatility-
of course I'm a little jaded, i've owned one since 1973 and no matter what bass I play, I always go back to the Precision. |

I just didn't want to buy something that might be collectible and worth something someday when my intent is to play it regularly. Never was much of a collector - I value utility over that any day!
I do love the sound of this bass. Between it and my Schecter Stargazer, I feel like I have a huge spectrum of bass sounds to play with.
