The reissue 1962 Jazz is a wonderful bass.
Find an old one made between 1982-1985, they a far better than any of the newer ones. Much lighter in weight, and sound killer.
They cost more, but for sound and playability, they are worth it.
And they hold there resale value very well. |

| | | | I played one once years back so I can't really comment on it. I have however recently played a 62 P bass reissue and 75 jazz reissue in my local shop that were stellar instruments. People on TB seem to really like Fender's American Vintage series basses. I believe there is a whole thread dedicated to them, you may want to field your question there. I own an American standard jazz and love it, I really think its a top notch instrument. Any American Vintage that I have picked up seems in the same ball park. IMO you can't go wrong with '62 Jazz. |

There are some thoughts that the earlier ones were somehow better, and while some of those earlier instruments might be special, the ones being made today are excellent instrument, top notch quality. The necks are a bit "thinner" than a standard USA Jazz, and I actually prefer the stacked volume/tone pots. Personally I think they're well worth the extra cost. |

| | | | i've played one for years I've got one, lake placid blue, that i've been playing for 30 years. It's the only axe I've owned, and I'm an uprite player who doubles. I've got the strings very high, and use flatwounds 'till one breaks, and then change the set; the current set is approx. 8 years old. I'm telling you all this to qualify my answer - I might not be the best reviewer of this instrument. I absolutely love it. As far as being worth the $, what are they going for these days, anyway? |

Sometime i crave the vintage look and put them on. The foam on the bridge cover helps with muting too, and if it works for you ergonomically, the neck pup cover can serve as a rest for your hand for slapping ala Marcus miller. They usually only stay for a few weeks before I make her take off her clothes again!
I love to put them on for photos though!

The AV'62 is a great bass - mellow and groovy - but the AV'75 has more growl.
If I had to pick one (and, thankfully, I don't), it would be the AV'75. |

With TI Jazz Flats on it the sound, especially recorded, was some of the best tones I have gotten from a bass. However, I could not get the neck to flatten out as much as I wanted, to the point that the truss rod max'ed out pretty quick and I had to put a bushing under the truss rod nut as I ran out of thread on the rod. I never did get the neck to give me the relief to provide a nice low action, maybe these basses can't do that, mine certainly couldn't. I sold the bass a couple years later. Anyone else have neck issues?

I love this bass immensely. It sounds warmer and punchier than any other jazz I've played. The stacked tone knobs are fantastic, and in my opinion should come standard on all jazz basses. The slim neck is fast and extremely comfortable. I've never had any problems with my neck (though having the truss rod adjustment buried in the neck only to be accessed by removing the neck is not the best situation for quick setups).
My opinion - you definitely can't go wrong. |

The bridge cover wasn't drilled properly by a previous owner and I wasn't happy with the location. It's a bit too much of a vintage thing for me anyways. The neck cover is on. I've been resting my thumb on it. I usually rest my thumb and mute right over the the neck pickup which obviously can longer be done. It's ok for now. I like the looks, but will probably come off. |

| You can easily adjust the truss rod by simply removing the pickguard and using the appropriate sized flat head screwdriver.
