Mike Eldred from the Fender CS just posted this in the Fender Forums:
Jazz neck, handwound pupus, looks like the CS is showing us bass players some love! Not sure about the sparkly paint.....I guess it's one of those "you either love it or hate it" things.

Let's not have yet another thread about his merits as a player. The jokes are beyond stale.

He plays exactly what the song needs, and his playing is a huge part of making U2 sound the way they do. With all the effects that Edge uses, Adam and Larry's job is to hold down the bottom end and glue it all together... and it works.
I'm not a huge U2 fan or anything, but to say someone is "lame" because he plays "exactly what is needed" is immature and honestly, pretty ignorant.
If the song NEEDS 3 notes, you shouldn't play 4. Music isn't about showing off - it's about "expression". Just like all paintings don't need to be "complex" to connect with people, all musicians don't need to play "complex parts" to connect.

I love the gold sparkle finish though. I thought he played Lakland Joe Osbornes though?

He also plays to packed stadiums every night and earns wads of cash from doing what he loves. Give me that kind of "lame" anyday.

But if he floats your Bassplayer-Boat, so be it. |

There's something to be said for playing exactly what the song needs pretty much every time they write one.
