Fender American Jazz 5 Weight

Sign in to disble this ad
Thought my 5 string days were gone forever! About 5 or 6 years ago I sold all of them and have been happy with my 4 string Fenders. As of lately, I have made a band change and I really need to pick up a five again. I know they will vary but could a few of you post the weight of your Fender American Jazz 5's? I have a pretty old back so weight is getting more and more important. I almost ordered the Steinberger Synapse for that reason but many of you thought that it is WAY over priced. Man, what I wouldn't give to have back my USA Spector. Thanks!

I weighed my '08 American Std. Jazz V a while ago, but I can't remember exactly what it was. It was either 9.2 or 9.3 lbs....not light, but definitely not heavy either. It's an easy bass to gig with for an entire night. I've had 4-string basses that weighed more, so no complaints about weight (or tone) here.

From what I've seen on the web most Fender 5 strings (P or J) seem to run 9-10 lbs.

My slightly older American Deluxe J V is 8.75 lbs. Its also very well balanced. Sometimes balance is more important than weight. As Carey Nordstrand reiterated the obvious.....
A 9 lb bass thats well balanced will be much more comfortable to play than an 8 lb bass that has neck dive. I'm paraphasing a little, but thats basically it. AND ITS TRUE!!! (in my opinion)

Thanks folks! I bet I could call in a have them weigh a few for me before I purchase one. I know Bass Central is pretty helpful.

I know what you mean about the weight. My bass (while not American, per say) is an MIM Jazz Active 5 that weigh's in at 10.5 pounds. I have a developing neck problem and if I stand for anymore than 15 minutes with that bass strapped on I'm feeling it in my neck and in my lower back.

Too bad. I've really been enjoying that bass but the weight may do me in.

My 08 J was 8 lbs, so occasionally you'll get lucky and find a super light one.
