Fender American Precision Deluxe

I finally got it. I've been looking at this for weeks while I pondered getting this or a G&L....as well as scraping together the money. The decision was made for me when the G&L sold.
Anyway, I picked this up the other day and took it straight to band practice. Right away I noticed a huge difference between anything I've had/used before and this bass. My last few basses were a Washburn T25(neck through), Fender Jazz(MIM), Fender Squier Jazz Fretless, Ibanez(don't remember the model), 1975 USA Fender Precision, USA Fender Jazz....and a bunch I don't remember. Anyway, suffice it to say this is the first time I've played an American Fender Precision Deluxe(60th Anniversary).

This is a tone monster. I don't even know what all the knobs do yet, but, I just set most of them to center and it sounded better then anything I've played yet. I was plugged into a Marshall amp(not sure of the model as the church owns it) which has a 4 by 12 cabinet. This is the same amp I've been playing my Washburn, Fender Jazz and Squier Fretless through. Anyway, the first thing I noticed was the output of this bass. I had to turn the volume down to half to stop the drums from shaking. Once I figure out what all the knobs do, the tone will just get better.

Congratulations. I've noodled on one of these every time I go to my local music shop. This will be my next purchase. Agree 100%, the tones and playability of this instrument are amazing.

Enjoy it.

Congrats! Those are great basses. They have a very well balanced, deep, fat, warm, rich, room, filling tone.

I owned a 5 string version for a short while before having to part ways with it for financial reasons.

I have one that's Montego Black (discontinued color) and just had it set up for the first time. These just stand on their own as far as tone goes. I don't use much in the way of pedals or toys with it,its all in the bass.....Good luck with it . .

Does anyone know where I can find the user manual? I would really like to know what all the knobs do.

I had this exact bass - it played great, but I wasn't much for the tone - probably the first and last active bass I'll own. but it is a well built bass - lots of luck!

Assuming that they're laid out the same as my '96, it's volume, pan (turn it up for the split pickup, down for humbucker), stacked treble/bass (the little top half is treble and the lower, larger part is bass), and mid. YMMV, since I replaced the guts in mine years ago and am infamous for having a poor memory.

I just picked one up last week from a fellow Tb'er. Sunburst with a maple neck. It's in mint condition, not a ding on it.

Used it at a gig this weekend, it was sweet. Very hot preamp. I had to turn the amp controls down a big. Big, round and full. Plus it's a beautiful bass. I tried to post some pics of it, but I had some problems this morning with the dang upload.

I am considering putting flats on it as flats really completes the bands overall sound.

I am extremely happy with it. Remember shop on TB first for the best deals and honest sellers!

You got a sweet one! I think a nice tort pickguard will make it look even better - just my opnion.

BTW -

top knob is master volume
then balance
then bass (lower) - treble (upper)
then Mids

All are cut or boost

Do the Deluxes have an option for a Passive mode?

I think what I would really like to find is a P/J 5-string that is either all passive or at least has a passive mode.

I think only the newest (2010) Deluxe Fenders have a passive mode.

But the new Deluxe Fenders do not have an option for a Precision 5-string, right? I don't see one on Fender's site.

I was actually thinking the same thing myself. Tort or possibly an antiqued mother of pearl to match the dots on the fretboard. That will be a little ways down the road though. For now I'm just enjoying the feel and the sound from this beast.

They definitely sell them here at Long and McQuade. Not sure if they have those stores in your area but here's the link to one of them.
