Fender Black Top Jazz sound like a P?

Sign in to disble this ad
Yes, I know it hasn't come out yet but from what you can see of it:

Do you think it will sound like a P but with the ability to dial in the bridge pickup for more clarity?

And the question I see tossed around here a lot about PJs:

Will it sound JUST like a P bass with the neck pickup soloed?

Personally I'm hoping it has many of the benefits of the jazz coupled with the Thunder of a P but we shall see!

Thanks for your guesses.

I think it'll sound like a P. Every other Jazz bass with P pickups (like, Mark Hoppus Sig, etc.) sounds like a P so I think it would.

It's pickups are in a Jazz Bass position (closer to the neck) so it won't sound JUST like a Precision neck pickup soloed. Ditto for Hoppus.

if the middle pickup is in the same location as a p's, then it would be pretty close.

however, i wouldn't say that rolling in the bridge position would add clarity, but more like the 'phased' two pickup sound of a j bass, unless you're equating the term 'clarity as having more treble. IME, using just one of the pickups in any of my two pickup basses (i.e. jazz basses, rics, alembic etc) actually has more clarity.

Thanks John. I was hoping someone like you with building experience would chime in.

I like the "precense' and warmth of the P but I have a hard time clearly hearing myself with a band at times. So I use a Jazz bass more. Not so much for the treble, but just to "hear" myself better and not just wallow in sort of feeling that I'm there.
I've been experimenting with different levels of sucess with PJs like the Areodyne and have had somewhat good sucess with the Dimarzio model Js but the jury is still kind of out.
That's why I'm curious about the Black Top. The Areodyne had some good positives in this regard, I disregarded it for other reasons sort of....

There are times I've gotten done playing a P with acoustic guitars, drums, Piano etc. on some ballady lower volume stuff and the P has all this rich wonderful warmth and I've left feeling like " Why do I need any other bass?"

Then there's other times the P has blurred... Tried a Jazz with clear smooth somewhat warm tones and said "Wow THIS is what I need" but missed that warm sturdy lows....

oh well....

Thanks.
