Fender buying help

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,
I have a five string schecter omen extreme. I love the active humbuckers, but i sometimes desire something that is smoother and less "tanky" than my five string beast. I was thinking about looking into either a jazz bass or a precision. The problem is, because of how common the instruments are, i am completely overwhelmed with the options. Fender has so many different models, as does Squier, and then all the off brand copies, as well as the mods that can be done to the basses. Its blowing my mind. Does anyone have any input for a $300-500 bass that would be appropriate for home recording and local gigging?

Sorry for such a vague topic

I just went through the process of buying another bass, and spent at least a couple of hours a day researching, reading reviews, etc. It really depends on what type of music you will be playing, and what sound you like. For $500 you might be able to find a used Highway One Precision Bass. They are pretty good sounding, and nice to play. You can always upgrade the pick-ups and tone controls later. For a little bit more you should be able to find a nice Fender Road Worn p-bass. They feel great, look great, and sound great.

Hands down best p bass value is a preloved MIM classic 50s. Should be able to find one for around 500.00 in excellent condition. Slap on a set of flats and you're there. Don't even need to change the pickup.

I have bought two modded MIM jazzes for around 500.00 each that sound and play killer. One has SCN pickups and is passive, the other has a East pre amp and Di Marzio js.

Found all of these shipped for right @ 500.00 each with hard shell cases and couldn't be happier for what I have invested-actually couldn't be happier @ any price because the feel, the sound, the look of Fender TO ME defines electric bass.

I don't at all think that's a vague topic. In that price range - The Mexican Classic 50s, 60s, and new 70s series Js and Ps are all good bets (used) as are the Squier Classic Vibes and Vintage Modifieds. Jazz or Precision is of course personal preference, but I'm of the camp that believes you can do anything with a good P bass. :-)

thanks for the advice guys. If it makes my vision more specific, I play a lot of indie, but I am trying to add a bit of funk to my playing. Also, I feel drawn towards the neck and string spacing of the Jazz. Any P bass fans have objections?
