dead link, but yeah, I've seen these around. They're pretty cool! Active electronics if I'm not mistaken, which isn't what you'd expect, but...

Want one so bad. Actually, I'd LOVE a Cowpoke 5, but they don't exist.

Do a TB search for "Cowpoke" and you'll be rewarded with gobs of good info.

I saw that. He was asking $400. I bought mine for $200 and immediately took a rattle can to it.

It's worth the $400.00 I love the Lace pickups and the preamp is a beast.

I got one from the TB classifieds here a few months ago for $400. They turn up occasionally. Well worth it. Nice looking and sounding bass though I am biased toward PJ's. The active electronics have a pretty hefty boost compared to my normal passive fretless experiences.

Sounds...

That's one ungainly pickguard they put on it. I'd change that immediately, but it seems like the bass should sound great.

LOL, I love that pickguard but functional it isn't.

Here's the TB cowpoke club thread: The Few, the Proud, the Cowpokes. (official Fender Cowpoke club)

Thanks! It's a cool bass, but I've modded it a bit (I can't leave anything alone). It was black on black, which is a bit boring, so I changed that up. I've also swapped the P-pickup to a SPB-2 and made the whole thing passive (using the stock jazz PU). I did save all the bits so I could put it back if I ever wanted to. It was my main bass for a while, but I recently put my old faithful MIM P back together and I've been using that.

They are very cool. That seller is ditching a bunch of gear, including studio stuff, so don't be afraid to haggle. It is one of my favorite basses.

That is pretty nice. I would probably just do a similar kind of guitar using the Warmoth 54 template and pickguard.

I had a cowpoke for a while. Nice bass with a unique look. People would definitely notice it, and didn't believe it was a "real" Fender at first. The build quality on mine was OK, not spectacular, but it did sound good. Mine had a bit of neck dive. I think the upper horn may be a little shorter than other Fenders. I sold it to fund some kind of GAS. Pretty cool bass.
