Fender Custom Shop Ideas... Would I need a Mortgage?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I was day dreaming about a custom bass today and I thought of two. Just for laughs, how much do you think something like this would cost me:

Fender Jaguar body/layout:
Deeper jazz neck (almost Warwick-y)
3 pickups, all single-coil P-pickups
the three selector switches turn the pickups on
master volume, master tone
active/passive switch
a preamp that is naturally more mid-rangey, with a treble and bass boost/cut with a "flat" knotch
Graffiti yellow/black pickguard/chrome control plate
Maple fingerboard and neck (black block/binding), Alder or ash body, darker neck wood, matching head stock.
String-through bridge

Fender Tele body/headstock:
Hollow with F-hole
2 Darkstar-style pickups, in more MM positions than Fender or Gibson positions
Volume/Volume/Tone, all passive in a telecaster guitar style control plate.
All black body, gold hardware, gold pickguard, matching headstock.
Ebony fingerboard (white binding/inlay), matching head stock.
Alder body, maple neck (painted black).

I'm thinking these would run about $10k apiece, so I need to start saving now haha... But I could be wrong. But if anybody could photoshop a rendering of these, that'd be cool

You could either mortgage your home or sell some body parts. Considering the housing market, I think you'd get a better price selling body parts.

Why have it made at the Fender CS when it could done at less than half the price with Roger Sadowsky, Nino Valenti, Mike Lull, Carey Nordstrand or any number of other builder?

Unless you're interested in paying most of that $10k for the decals, go with Kwesi's suggestion. Or pop on over to the luthier forum and get a TBer to do it.

Or call Warmoth. Their J necks are a bit thicker than Fenders, and Wyliee is available on TB. Those guys are awesome to deal with. With the possible exception of the paint job on the Jaguar I didn't see anything there that they can't do for $1-2.5k, counting hardware and pickups. The body style isn't up on their website yet (last time I checked) but they've already made at least one three-pickup Jag bass, check the Warmoth Club thread.

I heard Wells Fargo are giving out jumbo loans! On a more serious note I would go with what Kwesi said.....

I have to agree. I'm a Fender head and never would pay that crazy CS price.go custom or to a good top level production fender. The only CS P bass i ever played was near 3K and it was a complete dog...My modded MIM P bass blew it away.

Not like you're going to turn around and sell it, but if you pay that much and realize you don't like it, you'll take a MASSIVE hit on resale. If I was going to drop that kind of cash, I'd just buy vintage - something that'll appreciate over time.

Also +1 on just building it yourself. Who needs Fender CS?
