I've always wanted one, its a once in a lifetime instrument. So if you look at it one way, you only need to buy one, and never waste time or money on another bass. Anyway that's just my thoughts one the matter. Enjoy!

Fender Custom Shop basses are very good, but you can get better for cheaper.

For basses that sound similar to Fender, I recommend Lakland or Xotic.

I have a '90 CS Relic in Olympic White and it's a wonderfull instrument - I have some lovely basses (couple of Sadowsky's and a Suhr) and the CS Fender is right up there... different flavour of good!

Do it!

+1! I've owned quite a few Custom Shop Jazz basses and there is not one that I regret getting rid of. You can get one of these for the same money:

I'd keep the $ and get something cheaper. At the least wait a month. If it is still on your mind then go for it!

I've looked a Fender Custom shop basses a time or two, but you seriously can get a better instrument for a cheaper price.

The STARTING price for a custom shop Jazz is $4,600. For that money you can get a sadowsky, Low End Jazz, Nordstrand, Suhr, Lakland and pretty much anything else. Before you drop that kind of cash, definately check out your options.

I recently acquired a brand new (NOS) CS Jazz in bing cherry translucent with maple fretboard. I absolutely love it! It seems to be much higher quality than the US deluxe jazz I owned about 10 years ago. The CS came with the stock noiseless (humbuck) pickups, and I swapped them out with Lollars. Those Lollars are worth every penny! Fantastic tone! The build quality of the CS is, IMO, just as nice as my US Lakland Glaub. Both play like buttah!

I've never had a custom shop bass, but I've had MIM, USA, USA Deluxe and Custom Shop strats. The Custom Shop strat is miles above the rest.

Are you talking about the readily available CS model, or are you going to custom order a bass from the custom shop?

I paid $2175, but then I paid $180 for the Lollar single coils, and I also paid over $300 to upgrade the preamp to a John East J-Retro Deluxe.

IMO, the Sweetwater price is a bit high, but if they have the bass you want, then do it. Life is short!

I looked up a bunch of 60 and 64 reissue Custom Shop Jazz Basses earlier this week and it looked to me like they dropped the prices quite a bit for standard models. I saw lots of NOS models listed for 2200, which is pretty darn good.

That's an awesome bass. I couldn't see paying over $1500 for it though. At the end of the day, it's a Jazz Bass. For the kind of money Fender charges you can get a Brubaker, Elrick, Roscoe...you name it.

If you must have a Jazz copy, look at Sadowsky, Mike Lull, and Lakland.

Why would he want a copy if he can have the real deal?

Can get better for less, but the CS will appreciate in value as it gets older. A wise investment.
