Looks like an early 80s with the gold logo and blocks/binding. Could be legit, ask to see the neck stamp, pot codes, etc.

Looks real. Hard to tell without seeing it in person. I agree with coreyfyfe. Look at the pots and the neck stamp

Looks like a 78 maple neck on maybe a pre-75 body. .... After 75 they went to 3-screw neck plate. .... Pull the neck off and you'll see the little round plate for the tilt neck option. ..... Could have come with the boat anchor late 70's heavy Ash body and the guy swapped it out for something lighter. ..... If the body is Fender it'll have some (name) stamp in the neck cavity.

This neck is long after 'neck stamp', that ended in the early 70's when they started putting serial numbers on the neck decal. ..... S8 mean 78. ...... Not sure when they changed back away from the bullet tuss rod adjustment. .......
The Marcus Miller Jazz is a 75 and it has the bullet where the Geddy Jazz is a 73/74 and it has the truss rod at the heal.
to my knowledge they never reissued late 70's jazz basses.

Yes, the neck is a late '81 or 82 jazz but I'm not sure about the body, anyway I'm going to bed right now.

The neck is an '81-2, and the only distinctive feature I can make out on the body is the 3 bolt bridge, which was used in the early 80's, so my vote is it's real.

It's definitely a real Fender bass. These were known as transitional basses that used parts from several 'eras', around 1982. There's a blip of information on these in 'The Fender Bass Book'.

Looks legit to me. I agree with the pick guard being aftermarket, most likely. How's the neck, and how does it sound?

J. Flores stamped the neck on my P Elite II, too! According to Fender, the serial number was produced in '77 or '78.

it's definitely original and actually quite rare since it has white binding and black fingerboard dots (instead of white blocks).

+1 to this. As the transitioned into the 80s models they moved back to white guards, and at some point white pickup covers/knobs.

Agreed, IM(limited)E it's more common to see the white binding with a rosewood board/white dots like this one:

Just for fun though, while googling around I found some others...

That is a typical late 81 to 82; white binding, black dots, transition back to 4-bolt.

Yep, I've had 3 of these Black with Maple, Burst with Rosewood and a Gold on Gold with maple.
All had white covers and knobs. All were heavy as boat anchors.
