Fender Experts: what was this originally?

Sign in to disble this ad

I've had this thing for about 17 years now and used it as backup to my main P. I bought it for $250 from a guy who needed the cash and I've kept it in playable condition but other that that never really paid much attention to it.

I've been making a few bucks gigging lately and decided to make it a project bass. I had the J pickup added and replaced the neck as I have small hands and don't like the width of most P necks.

I'll probably sell the original neck so I checked it out and it said Made In Japan. Fender decal, serial number on the headstock that starts with a letter. I don't have the serial number right now, the neck is being cleaned up for sale by my tech.

This thing went from being something that was just kind of there if I needed it to possibly being my new main instrument. It came with an EMG P so I added an EMG J. Controls are Volume, Pan, Tone. It sings. The neck is a Warmoth Tele with a semi satin finish. I've barely been able to put this bass down for the last 24 hours.

Anyway, to the point of this novella: the odd thing about the instrument is that it was routed for a side-mounted output jack, but only one P pickup. This doesn't conform to any Japanese or American model from the time that I can find. Maybe my Google-Fu is off. Anyone have a clue?

Was there a Japanese model like this or was it probably a Japanese neck stuck on some other body?
