ALSO how can I be a marketing tool? Have you seen some of Fender's sig. artists? Mikey Way, Avril Lavgine, ALL of Bliff Pyro (or whatever you call them), and Mark Hoppus? What have those guys done except sold a few million records? Sounds like to me Fender is just giving a sig. model to anyone who can move product but, as musicians none of them actually deserve it. That is only part of the reason I'll never own a Fender.

P.S. Also we should all know by know I am very comfortable living with hate afterall hate makes the world go round.
I guess none these players actually deserve Fender signature basses:

James Jamerson
Roscoe Beck
Pino paladino
Steve Harris
Marcus Miller
Geddy Lee
Fran Bello
Reggie Hamilton
Tony Franklin
Dusty Hill
Duff McKagen
Sting
Roger Waters
Victor Bailey

I tried this bass out and found it very uncomfortable, and wasn't really impressed with the sound.

You'll have to explain to me why so many top notch bassists play Fenders... Marcus Miller is one of the first names that comes to mind!!!!

Before I played bass I thought since they were the only basses I've ever seen that they were the only ones made.
As a player I look at Fenders as over glorified, overpriced pieces of junk. Just because they have the most share of the market doesn't mean that their the best as a matter of fact I think they are some of the worst quality basses made.

My ATK305 is solid dependable and more versatile than any Fender I ever picked up. I guess for now I'm an Ibanez guy but, really I like to look at myself as just 'a bassist who will play anything that tickles my fancy' guy.

What tickles my fancy is a rather short list:
Bolt on - a must
Rosewood fretboard - preferred
An eye catching body style
AND
No Fender or Squire logo anywhere near it
I remember when I was young like you and had these types attitudes...those were the days!

We'll talk again in, let's say....20 years or so. Not saying that you'll like Fenders or anything....but, you never know. I'm pretty sure you may mellow out a bit and realize the stance you've taken now means literally nothing in the grand scheme of life.

It all goes in cycles, 10 years from now the majority of talkbass will be trash-talking classic brands like Ric and Fender and will be paying top dollar for vintage "pointy" Jacksons and deans. 10 years after that the boutiques will take over again and the masses will all worship small gold idols of Stuart Spector. 10 years after that everone will be "GASing big time" for the Made in Kenya Squires and debating if they're better than the classic MIM that they had as a kid.

I find the lack of upper-fret accessibility disturbing.

Conversation over goodbye.

I think he said he would play for the Backstreet Boys, not them play for him.

Agreed. It's also a poor way to go through life. I like what I like and don't what I don't. What others think about it is irrelevant.

I love Ibanez (BTB), but the ATK is an entry level line and plays as such... and that B string... wow... it made a Peavey B seem tight, and I usually like Ibanez B strings...
Actually the ATK line came around in the 90's and back again in mid-2000's. There have been multiple grade levels of ATK made in Korea and Japan, and the early instruments are very well made.

In fact, there have also been US-made Ibanez ATKs, with the Bunker tension-less neck, and there is currently an Ibanez Prestige ATK1200 http://www.ibanez.com/BassGuitars/model-ATK1200

I love my '94.

I was curious, so just for fun:

James Jamerson - No signature bass... don't even know where the funk machine is to base it off of
Roscoe Beck - Do they still make these? I haven't seen one for years...
Pino paladino - Actually a very solid bass, pretty much akin to his own
Steve Harris - Not of the same grade he uses
Marcus Miller - only if you buy a 5 is a bass MM actually plays live
Geddy Lee - cheap reproduction
Fran Bello - dropped, now uses ESP
Reggie Hamilton - cheap reproduction
Tony Franklin - I bet he plays his signature live, even if not it holds an important place in the Fender family right now, fretless P
Dusty Hill - Another pretty solid repro, very close to his own
Duff McKagen - probably the only one you can get that is close to the real thing for less than an arm and a leg, and you can buy the real thing for less...
Sting - cheap repro
Roger Waters - doesn't actually play his own signature
Victor Bailey - No longer with Fender

And adding

Jaco Pastorius - the real clone of his is truly worthy of being called his signature bass
Stu Hamm - Don't think they have made the Urge II for years but i would love to try one and have always wanted to.

One thing they all have in common though is commercial, mainstream success, the above mentioned ones have also received critical acclaim... unlike Avril Lavigne or Slipknot... who are successful because they sing whiny songs about whiners for whiners, aka teenage angst music.

P.S. Everybody ever, including you and I, listens to spitty with an H music.

That's called good business. Most of the larger companies do it and it's not exclusive to Fender.

I think every Warwick is a sig model. Just buy one and play it on stage and they will make it a sig model for you.....

I think I saw a dotted like on the back of the headstock on one just waiting for your John Handcock

You are only partially correct here. If you look in the RH thread, Reggie posts pics of three basses he is touring with. One is a masterbuilt model, so yes, anything else is a cheap knockoff. The second is a teambuilt, which I think is/was a production model bass. The third is an MIM, or "cheap reproduction" as you called it. To be fair, though, that bass is not like the production model, but not because of Fender - Reggie says he loves to tinker.

There are much better basses than Fenders. However, it IS the sound we've heard on at least 80% of all records since the 60s. Naturally, we're going to subconsciously aim towards that sound, leading us to Fenders. Anything that isn't a Fender sounds just a tiny bit off for most people.

I've always had Fenders. Everything else feels like a guitar. Had a Rick, it was okay and a Hamer..not good.

All this new stuff Fender's making is depressing. It's like Harley...all their new bikes are quasi retro and look like they're dragged through a Kuryakin book.

Hey "XtheDead"...what kind of pick do you use?
