Fender Frecision bass 1977 with a switch in a body

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi!
I have a chance to buy a vintage P-Bass which seems to have an original neck but the body seems to be either modified or just attached from a different bass or is just a custom/home made body. This is because besides the knobs and cable input it also has an added pickup and a switch that activates/diactivates front and rear pickups.

You can see the pics there: Fender Precision Bass 1977 rok USA (2078415126) - Allegro.pl - Wi

I checked the sound and it is fine but like to know your opinion guys about it before I decide whether to grab it or not.
Thanks in advance.

The switch is in a position where there is usually no routing - and no routing close by to tap into. I would get a look under the pickguard to see how much wood was removed and how decent the modification was.
Also, original body or not (and I strongly suspect not based on the pix), the bass should command a much lower value than a stock '77 P.

That is most definately not a fender body, the pickups are not where they are supposed to be

I'm thinking the switch was added as a mod to select between neck and bridge pickups.

The precision (neck) pickup looks like someone moved it way closer to the neck than a stock Fender.

Looks like an aftermarket body with a real Fender neck.

the body has a laminated top and it's NOT a fender. the pickups, with the p pickup in the wrong location, have hex key magnet poles (possibly dimarzio, but probably old imported dimarzio clones), the bridge is an imported one with brass saddles and metric screws (non fender), and the pickguard is a thick single ply with a beveled edge, so i think that the only actual fender part on the bass is the neck.

The body reminded me of Matsumoku.

Thank you for all your replies.
I can buy guitar for 1000$.
Do you think that it is OK assuming neck is original, body is NOT, pickups are DiMarzio, switch and other controls work well and the sound is also fine?

Thank you

$1000 is way too high, you'll never get your money back when you want to sell it.

Defiantly laminated body. Not Fender.

Plywood body says don't do anything near $1k on this bass.
